Are you game?

fallon's picture

JulNoWriMo (aka July NaNo) starts on July 1st. I just thought I'd see if anyone else is considering taking the plunge and participating in the challenge this year?

Fanaile and I took the plunge this afternoon and would love company! 50k in 31 days... or 1613 words a day. (Which to me means 1500 words a day and an hour of roaming inner editor time).

Either way... anyone else up for it? The BfP contest ends June 30th, so that will be out of the way by the time JulNoWriMo rolls around! Plenty of time to make your daily goal... whatever it may be!

That is alot of words. I am pretty sure of the answers I am about to ask but I will anyway. Do you want them posted here or does any thing anywhere count? DOes it have to be coherent? Do grocery lists or 'to do' lists count? DOes spelling projects for five year olds count?

I am considering the challenge I just know I will have to make up for the days I will be on all day drives ...road trip! and in school... and moving. maybe I will have to average more then two thousand a day....

What you count is really up to you, though the point is to write 50k of a novel. I've known people that participated and set the 50k goal for any type of writing... poetry, scripts, articles, personal essays, books they'd already started (which is what Fanaile is planning to do) etc. So, I'm not really picky as to what you count. The point (according to me, I'm sure others would argue that they think the point is different) is to challenge yourself, get into the habit of writing everyday and see where it takes you. So, whatever you want to write (though I'd probably argue about counting grocery and to do lists :P) would work.

For me personally, I'm only counting words on the story I started this afternoon. My goal will put me right below the 50k goal (mine is 46,550 for the month); so if I have time or the inclination, I might spend some time on some of the other works in progress. Although I'm really loathe to spend any of that on the things I've already started because I'll get the urge to write like mad and edit later and end up tearing it all to hell at the end of the month because I wrote too quickly and don't like any of it.

If you can't do 50k; set a smaller daily goal to begin. You'll probably find you're ahead of your personal daily goal by the end of the month and maybe even nearer the 50k than you thought you would be!

And no, you don't have to post it here (though you can post on the CW site if so inclined). Just updates as to how it's going if you want to do that. That's up to you too.

I am feeling rambunctious and think I will try the whole thing. I actually have an amazing idea that starts with one sentence and want to see if I can actually write it and take it way past two pages while making sense. This will be one hell of a goal for someone like me whose thoughts are mostly intangible or backwards.

Good luck to everyone!

Awesome! Don't you love when you get a single sentence that tempts you into writing way beyond that first little piece?

I can't wait for July! I'm super excited and ready to go. I actually managed 1900 words today in an effort to get back into the habit of writing; having to take so much time and not getting to write regularly when sis went into the hospital and had Aybra threw my habits way out of whack.

Kaia curled up on the bed beside me and played with his Scooby Doo action figures while I wrote. He'd look over every once in a while and ask how many words that was. I'd tell him I didn't know and he'd say "I do! It's a whooole bunch!" He finds it utterly fascinating that I write words like the ones that are in his books. It's a whole new concept that someone actually writes the words that he likes having read to him.

It was really sweet of him to keep me company and behave himself (he's been a hellion lately). Hope he's as good next month!

I stared NaNoWriMo last year, but only got about a quarter of the way through.

But this, this JulNo thing you speak of... it's in the SUMMER!

I'm game :)

haven't decided!!

I'd love to continue with The Claudia Story, but I recently found this awesome 1-page description that I wrote after going to this guy's really freakishly gross yet intriguing house that I'd like to do something with. I've also got an awesome story idea from some silly livejournal quiz thing where you let your random iPod shuffle determine a movie soundtrack for your life.... haha!

So who knows. I've got... what... a week to figure it out? :D

Do you longhand a lot? I spent most of November NaNo working 12 hour night shifts so I'd take a thing of paper with me and write all night while my patient slept (when he still slept). Come December, I convinced hubby to buy me the FlyFusion... such a beautiful invention. I'm not tethered to the computer and don't have to type anything if I longhand... it just copies it all over.

It's brilliant if you do a long of longhand!

I think we're taking a trip up to the Black Hills, then over to Yellowstone, over the course of a week. And I'm pretty sure my boss is going out of town the week I come back, so I might actually have work to do that week (long story... our boss is a horder, and so we go through all his papers and such and file them and shred them while he's away. It doesn't last long, but at least we find stuff).

The patient I visited twice a week for like a year and a half was like that. I'd go in Wednesday and have her house sparkling and on Friday... I got to do it all over again. She kept everything. I can only imagine how scary a doctor's office can get!

The trip sounds like fun. I'd love a vacation, but that's like... a year away! I think I'm going to hole up in a hotel suite with a massive tub for a weekend when Aybra gets home and soak the weekend away. That'd be a dream come true!

You can keep it completely private. It's really up to you. I usually post blurbs on my writing blog and send just about everything to Fanaile to read over since she's the only one insane enough to sit at the computer half the night and write with me lol. But whatever floats your boat works. :)

I may join, then. I haven't completely decided yet, but I've considered writing an autobiography for myself only to read. It would only be for therapeutic purposes, and maybe someone could publish it after I'm long gone. This would motivate me to at least get started and maybe see what others are writing about.

I've never heard of this before. Sounds like a fabulous idea and since my internship starts on July first I will have something interesting to write about that will serve me later in my career.

Can I assume journaling counts? I plan to keep a detailed list and description of all of the tasks I complete and since I will also be doing paperwork that deals a lot with the business end of my internship I suppose I will count that as well (although I doubt it will be necessary to meet my goal).

50K in 31 days. What a great idea. Thank you so much for posting this! More information will be great too like if there is a website or anything.

fallon's picture

http://julnowrimo.thewrigro.com is the website. I would personally say journaling counts but like I said in earlier comments... I'm not picky. The point is 50k words of a novel... but honestly if the challenge motivates you to write 50k words... who cares if it's a novel, short stories, poetry, articles, personal essays, journals? Whatever works for you!

You've inspired me Fallon. The number of words goal totally and completely intimidates me, but I'm thinking of getting a notebook and trying to fill it in a month. I'm not quite sure what I'll try to write about, but if I can actually write every day for a whole month it will be an accomplishment, and if I can actually fill the notebook remind me to celebrate, because I'll have written more then I've ever written in a month.

Just to fill the journal. 50k sounds like such an intimidating goal, and I don't even know what that would look like, so my goal is just going to be to fill a notebook and hope there's something half way decent in the 100 pages I write. I'm aiming to fill four notebook pages a day, so if I meet my goal every day, I'll finish before the month is through. If I fill the notebook and think it's all crap, remind me to celebrate any way, because I've never written that much in this short of a time, and I'm kind of excited to see if I can do it.

"Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more than others think is practical, and expecting more than others think is possible."

Absolutely! The one I worked on during NaNo in November is actually one of my favorites, despite that it was in dire need of editing when it was all over. So, if you fill the notebook, we'll definitely make you celebrate even if you hate every word of it... simply filling the notebook is a goal met!

OR I'll write about my experiences during and after Hurricane Katrina, how the city was before and after, and how people from New Orleans are viewed, especially in Texas.

I would have said that November is more busy, but then I realized I have 23 classes starting Wednesday that I'm PA'ing in, Aybra is coming home tomorrow and I have final exams the week of the 9th. So... they're both nuts around here apparently! Hopefully not for you though. November NaNo is fun. Gives you something to obsess about while you wait for Thanksgiving food (and if you're like me, come November 1st you don't really give a flip if turkey is an animal so long as it's plucked, cooked and carved lol).

I've been such a lump lately!

Last night I HAD to draw or paint or something... so I got out my oil [pastels] and made 2 pieces that got me nowhere except wanting to draw more ... I had no success and no closure and was not pleased.

Then, I get all these beautiful thoughts in my head... like right now, about the weather. It's been BURNING sun for the past three or four days; blue skies, ninety degrees, the works. Tonight, my house is about 100 degrees so I step outside to read a little and the clouds start rolling in. It's now only about 80 degrees and the clouds are dark and it looks like thunder and rain and everything is covered in this amazing silver haze...

So I pull out my computer to try to turn it into pretty words and I get poop.

Now I'm on ProU and this amazing weather is going to poop.

I'm scared for July 1... although when I'm writing in my various short stories and novels that I've started over the years, I'm pleased with the results.

I'm craving and longing for art, and I just can't seem to create any..

I'm hoping JulNo will help... spark my fancy.

Despite my artists-block, it's been a great start for me! It's been 40 minutes since July 1st started, and I'm already pretty close to my minimum word count for day 1.

I decided to continue my NaNo, and I'm LOVING it. After JulNo, I'm going to go back and sort of revamp the intro and first two pages or so so that the voice matches the rest of it, but otherwise, I'm loving my hopefully-soon-to-be-first-actually-finished-novel. Haha.

Hope everyone else is feeling as pumped as me!! Good luck on Day One!

[Note-- I only stopped writing so I could go to bed-- otherwise, I wouldn't be wasting precious writing time talking about how I'm happy to be writing! haha!]

I want to get about three pages typed 12 pt single space before midnight.
