globalization: modern day imperialism?

Tagged:  •    •    •

Low wages. Foreign goods. Capitalism. These words describe some of what globalization offers. Globalization is deemed as a positive influence towards developing countries. The government and most of the media supports globalization, but is globalization a good thing? To what extent is globalization just modern day imperialism?

The Power of a Big Mac

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •

It's the strangest thing to me. I don't even really like McDonald's or their burgers, but sometimes when I'm sick of Chinese food and homesick for something familiar. I gotta have a double cheeseburger or a Big Mac. Everything at McDonald's tastes exactly same as the way in does in America.

Beyond the Borders

I have been lucky. I’ve had the unique opportunity to do some traveling around the globe, and I actually currently live in Japan. After growing up in a small Wisconsin town, my perceptions of the world were, well, quite small. I rarely saw people of different ethnic origins, and was surrounded by middle-class white republicans. My world was small. How many of us can relate to this feeling?

Capitalism is what defines America, and oil is a perfect example of capitalism. Capitalism is a free market, also known as supply and demand.

That is right, I support Sweatshops

I take a course at my high school called AP Comparative Government. Recently we had a debate on globalization. China is a country that in some ways is being hurt and helped by an international market. China is the leader in textile products as does so with large usage of sweatshop labor.

Globalization In Terms of Nationalism: What Globalization Really Is

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

Globalization can’t solve everyone’s problems. Despite being based on an ideal of universal benefits, globalization has proved itself to be a system that has complicated the problems of many nations. Globalization would actually benefit everyone if it were carried with perfectly equal representation of and influence by all nations, but such perfection is only utopian.

The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism

I just watched an interview on Charlie Rose with a very insightful author. Naomi Klein.

Charlie Rose is generally a very good interviewer, but in this case he seemed to interrupt and misconstrue her. Ms. Klein was far more clear thinking, and the interview left me wanting to hear more from her.

I have not read anything by her, but that will soon change.
