In my last blog I posed the question, "Exactly what is the bible?". Is it a message from God to us, or is the message solely from fallible humans? As was shown by the statements from the official creeds of mainstream Christian denominations, most Christians believe it to contain the inerrant word of God. In fact one of the arguments for God's existence (and an underlying assumption for many of the other arguments for God's existence) is the ARGUMENT FROM THE BIBLE. The logic of the argument is simple:
In investigating the "sophisticated" arguments for God's existence I have noticed a problem that should be elemental in any philosophical discussion of this type. The arguments seldom specify exactly what type of God they are actually arguing for. They appear to imply that any argument for any God is an argument for their particular God. But these arguments use different definitions of God.
There are so many bad arguments used to justify Christianity it is hard to know exactly where to begin. I decided I would begin with an argument that could be made to the introductory blog in this series.
Vocal atheists often get accused of being "blissfully ignorant" of sophisticated arguments for God's existence . These arguments, we are told, put religious belief on a sound rational footing. However, we are never told exactly what these sophisticated arguments are.
I received a personal message asking if I knew any online articles or if I had written a blog on string theory. I have mentioned string theory in a blog or two and have alluded to it in some responses but I have not written a blog. I made a quick reply giving the best of my understanding of string theory. After thinking about it for a while I thought it might make a good blog.
There has been a spate of books come out recently by atheists criticizing the belief in God. These books portray the belief in God as being inherently irrational. This a rather strong statement, especially considering that 85%+ of the people in this country profess a belief in God.
