Good Old Day Light Saving Time

Tagged:  •

Like the average American, I just assumed every state followed daily light saving time rules. I noticed an article in my local paper and learned that's not always the case.

In fact, this year is the first time since 1970 Indiana is observing the time change.

For the first time in three decades, Indiana is falling back. The entire state will turn back the clocks in observance of daylight-saving time this weekend, thanks to a bill passed last year.  Read More »

Coping With 300 Million People.. Preparing for 100 Million More

Tagged:  •    •

There was the interesting article I spotted in today's issue of "USA Today." It questions how the United States will cope with unprecedented growth in the next several decades, as the USA is growing faster than any other industrialized country in the world. In fact, sometime in 2040, population estimates will surpass 400 million--34 years away. This is compared to the 39 years it took to reach 300 million.  Read More »

A 700 Mile Fencing Job

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

Well the United States could be called a prision..

From the Associated Press:

President Bush signed a bill Thursday authorizing 700 miles of new fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border, hoping to give Republican candidates a pre-election platform for asserting they’re tough on illegal immigration.

“Unfortunately the United States has not been in complete control of its borders for decades and therefore illegal immigration has been on the rise,” Bush said at a signing ceremony.  Read More »

Christmas... Already??

Tagged:  •    •

It's not even Halloween yet and some stores have already stocking shelves with the Christmas goodies. Here's some snippets of the article from MSNBC.com. You can read the full article here.

Santa isn’t here yet, but retailers already are stocking shelves with Christmas merchandise, in some cases setting up Christmas trees and holiday lighting way before Thanksgiving and even pre-empting Halloween.  Read More »

Overpaid Teachers and the Treament of Homeless People

Tagged:  •    •    •

Not too much happening in the news today, besides the usual war crap and Congress scandals.

Here's what I dug up for the day....

*Some Ohio teachers are getting a total of $20 million from the federal government as part of a federal incentive program. Ohio's grant will be distributed in four of the state's most academically challenged school districts -- where teachers already have higher-than-average salaries. The program is aimed at rewarding teachers who improve student performance in some of the nation's toughest schools. The Bush administration encourages schools to pay high-performing teachers and principals more than others. The 16 grants total $42 million and cover many states.  Read More »

More Remains Found at WTC Site

Looks like the search isn't over in Lower Manhattan.

Officials said that they have yet to unearth more than half the underground sites overlooked during initial searches for human remains conducted at Ground Zero after the 9/11 attacks. 18 pieces of bones alone were found just yesterday.

40% of the victim's families still have no identifiable remains. They are now calling for federal intervention, demanding answers for the incomplete search. Despite this, construction at the World Trade Center hasn't been halted.  Read More »

Woman Discovered More Than A Year After Death

Tagged:  •

There was this sad story in my local newspaper today. Kinda off-beat, but still worth the read...

"Karen Freelin died in her home along busy 90th Street in Omaha, and no one knew for more than a year.

She was finally discovered this month when the flash of a city housing inspector's camera illuminated her body, lying on the living room couch as if sleeping.  Read More »

Gas Prices Contiune to Drop!

Tagged:  •

Those days of $3.00 for a gallon of gas seem to be coming to an end.

The national average is hovering around $2.20 a gallon, which is down 8 cents from two weeks ago. Prices have dropped more than 82 cents since Aug. 11.

Tulsa, Oklahoma records the lowest average in the United States, $1.98.

I'm about to drive down there for some gas. I can't wait for the day when it gets under $2.00 here.  Read More »
