Culture

To me, the word culture means learned behavior and ideas. Culture has something to do with our religion, tradition, language and beliefs. In my culture, our religion is Buddhism. My family would usually pray and worship to the gods at home or at a temple. The gods we believe in and worship are called Buddha and the Goddess. I can still remember when I was a little boy; my mother would usually take me and my sister to the temple. Each time I go to the temple, the monks and other people would sit down and praying to the gods. My parents respect god a lot and believes Buddha would protect them. They think that praying Buddha would bring the family good luck and health.
When we’re at home, we weren’t allowed to eat beef because of our religion. Eating beef was banned in our religion because killing a cow is a sinful act. At home, we can eat any kinds of meat except for beef. Also, if a person commits evil deeds then god will banished him to hell. As a child, my parents would usually tell me to do good deeds if I want to go to heaven. I believed my parents are telling the truth because god will never punish good people.
Chinese was the primary language I learned when I was a kid. I didn’t know any other languages before I arrived to the United States. When I arrived to the United States, I started to learn how to read and write in English. English would be my secondary language. Reading and writing in English was difficult for me at first because my parents couldn’t help me. After a while, I got used to reading and writing in English. At home, I often speak both English and Chinese to improve my speech.
