Need to vent

So...school starts back up again in two weeks. It's pretty exciting because its my last semester on campus, and I will be graduating in April. However, no matter how close you get to the end the books don't get any cheaper. I have one class starting that according to the bookstore has six books that are all going to cost almost $200. For one class its $200 dollars! And then another class has five books...but the bookstore won't even tell me how much those are yet because they aren't even on the shelf yet. I really don't like the monopoly bookstores have on the textbook market. This year was the first time they actually gave the list to me early enough that I might find out if I can get them somewhere else for a better price, but I don't know where is the better price. Ugh...hopefully I will in a few days.

And then there's the whole fact that I really can't afford books this year...my husband's hours are getting cut again and I don't know how we're going to make ends meet never mind pay for my last year. It seems silly for me to not go because I'm so close and I'll be able to get a real job next year. But then on the other hand I feel guilty. I feel guilty for wanting to finish school. I feel guilty for wanting to get a planner for school. I feel guilty for wanting a few new shirts. I hate feeling guilty.

Most books are available at the campus library for free. There's also http://www.dealoz.com/ to look for cheap books online. And most major bookstores, like Borders and Barnes and Noble, have text books available. They're the same price as at the book store, but unless there's plastic wrap over them, you can read them at the store.

I second this. I made it through my last history class (which required a good 5-6 books) by checking them out from the campus library. I was too poor to afford to buy them, even used.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Anybody else who reads my post and sees the library suggestion, I would be cautious....at least in my library you can only renew so many times so you won't have the book for the whole semester if that is what you need it for. Also, some other classmates might put it on hold forcing you to be without a book.
And in terms of buying elsewhere, I have done this before though I've never heard of dealoz, and part of the perk of not buying at the bookstore is getting them cheaper so your standard bookstore is no good. For others out there I usually look at amazon, abebooks, and half.com because people can sell used books there for cheaper than bookstores just to get them out of there house. I know I do. --
