Well, i have turned in my project and i wanted to let you all know that you can view it and my fellow students projects @ ba-project.pbwiki.com thank you to those who participated!!!!!!!
I am currently in college and as part of a course we have a project with the topic of: internet necessity or luxury and I would like to know what you all think!!!!
I believe that it should be a luxury but in my life it has become a necessity. In school , to turn in homework i have to upload the work (it is a computer class) and at work, i have to use the internet to view my schedules and time cards, customer lookup, and due the assigned learning material, and to send e-mails to co-workers because it can be impossible to contact them otherwise.
I have decided that for my research i was going to do interviews because this topic is not a topic were i can list facts. It is all opinion. I have come up with a list of questions and i would be delighted to hear your opinion.
1. do you believe the internet is a necessity or a luxery?
2. If not a necessity, do you believe it will eventually become a necessity? If a necessity, why?
3. How often are you on the internet? what purpose?
4. Is the internet required for school? how/ why?
5. What are your options without using the internet? (school)
6. Is the internet required for work? How /why?
7. What are your options without using the internet? (work)
8. Do you use the internet for communicating?
9. Do you have any other options for communicating with these people? if so, what. If not, why not?
10.Do you use the internet for entertainment purposes?
I know some of these questions i could probably answere for you since obviously you use the internet to blog but i want to know your responses. I would love to hear any other comments that you have on this topic.PLEASE COMMENT!!!! your responses will make my report more accurate. Thank You.

1. do you believe the internet is a necessity or a luxery? necessity
2. If not a necessity, do you believe it will eventually become a necessity? If a necessity, why? while sure we could all probably exist without a lot of things in life if circumstances dictated (including internet), in the post-industrial american society one usually needs internet
3. How often are you on the internet? what purpose? now, boredom and avoid doing other things
4. Is the internet required for school? how/ why? yes, blackboard, registration of "teaching aids," etc.
5. What are your options without using the internet? (school) none really...
6. Is the internet required for work? How /why? maybe, i know we have an intranet at work, but i'm not sure if the programs are run off mainframes at our site or from the internet or a combination of the two
7. What are your options without using the internet? (work) depends on 6
8. Do you use the internet for communicating? yes
9. Do you have any other options for communicating with these people? if so, what. If not, why not? yes, but internet is easier than text
10.Do you use the internet for entertainment purposes? yes
I guess it depends on what you mean by necessity. Do we need it to live or survive and to be Alive....? No. Maslow came up with a neat Hierarchy of needs and those basics to life do not include internet. The next step has to do with safety and security, it does not really include internet but it could be stretched to fit...on a long shot. The rest of it is ‘phoof’ i.e. luxury.
As Americans we believe our luxury is a necessity, when you get down to the nitty gritty, we may not know anything or be able to spell without the internet (sad really) but we will surely survive and can live without it.
I look forward to seeing what comes of this project you have and thank you for sharing it with us.
There are very few human beings who receive the truth, complete and staggering, by instant illumination. Most of them acquire it fragment by fragment, on a small scale, by successive developments, cellularly, like a laborious mosaic.~- Anais Nin
Do we need the internet? No. People function just fine without it. In that sense, it's most certainly a luxury. In fact, I'd venture to say it's a luxury all together... you can learn perfectly well without the internet (though the internet does make it easier to narrow down the information you're given), you can work perfectly well without the internet. But, if you took away computers (note that I did not say internet) from people, it would be difficult for us to get on as we do now.
At work, my whole day is based around computers. I identify patients by computers, I know what tests need to be done on a certain person due to computers, the tests themselves are run on computers, we keep track of every step in the process through computers. Do we use the internet? No, we don't have access to the world wide web... we use an intranet, which can only be accessed within the hospital. Without it, communication between the different departments would be more difficult.

I'd have to agree with the others with "luxury". It's just such an advanced form of communicating and entertainment that it can almost masquerade as a necessity...at least to those who are thoroughly addicted to it.
I do need the Internet for school, but not as much as you'd think. Usually it's just for research purposes or to log in to Web CT where we have online discussions, and that's really it. That, and email, which becomes pretty important sometimes...
i have read the comments so far and first i ant to thank you for your feedback, I have found it very interesting that you all agree that it is a luxery however most of you are required to use it for school or work. Isn't then a neccesity to do your job or your school work but not a necessity to live?
