When Does Reality TV Cross the Line? A New Show May have Just Done it.

I heard on the news today that CBS is making a new reality TV show called "Arranged Marriage". Their aim is to find people between the ages of 25 and 40 who are so desperate to be married that they will settle for anyone. But it gets better, they say, because the contestants will not get to decide on their one mate (of course). Just like an arranged marriage, their families will choose their spouse.
THE F*CK?!
How well was this idea thought through?

I can't help but wonder WHO would be desperate enough to go on a degrating show like this. And think about this, if you're on the show, their's probably a reason for it- so....their's probably a reason that your FUTURE SPOUSE is on the show as well. You don't know what you're getting yourself into.

In other cultures, I understand, arranged marriages may be much more common. However, even in such cultures, I doubt that it would ever be acceptable to assign such commercialism to a sacred connection.

Honestly, it kind of annoyed me. Do you think this is an acceptable reality show? Is it appropriate for a person, regardless of their shortcomings, to throw themselves into the public eye in such a way? for me, this is different from "The Bachelor", or "Elimidate"- it goes beyond watching celebrities get married on television.

Agreed? Yay or Nay?

Dani

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Reality shows are stupid.

But, they reflect their potential audience. People don't want to think too hard so they turn to something simple for background noise or mindless stimulation. At least, that's my theory.

Your theory is pretty generous in its assessment of the mental capacity of the people who watch these shows.

I don't think it is so much a matter of not wanting to think as it is of not being able to think

...gay marriage is immoral. It just gets more and more heartwarming every time I hear about all the great uses of the "sanctity" of straight marriage. If this is what people are going to do with it, how can anyone perceive that there is any sanctity left in straight marriage?

It pisses me off. I just want to marry the person with whom I've shared my life for the past five years so we can protect ourselves and our children legally and financially, and so we can have equal recognition as a legitimate family unit, and I'm not allowed to do so. I don't want to be on TV, I don't want to profit from it, I don't want to make a game of it. Grr.

That's an even better way to look at it, isn't it? If people find gay marriage immoral, how can they say something like THIS isn't? I completely agree with you. From my experience, gay couples are more genuinely in love than straight couples anyway, so to say that their realtionship could be bad is nonsense. As long as they are in love, it shouldn't matter. The people in this show, however, will most likely NOT be in love, or even like, by the time they are forcefully wed.

Unless you're on that show...I think it was called "A Shot at Love", which had one of the worst premises I've ever heard of. It was starring some famous girl (famous for I don't know what) calling herself Tila Tequila who was lookin' for lovin'...from either a guy or a girl. Apparently then gay relationships weren't immoral, or else there would have been some advisory before the show like:

WARNING!: This program contains innuendo of non-accepted cultures/lifestyles. This is meant as a hypothetical situation in some alternate universe only. Watch for educational purposes only. Forget that the show is completely idiotic. Forget your own name...

And then, if you're familiar with Futurama, the Hypno-Toad comes on and makes you obey...

(did I get into that a little too far? :) )

Lmao, you are beautiful- and soooooooo right.
"A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila" was basically porn anyway, it seemed to me.

Lol.

In my first semester in college I was stuck with two girls I didn't know...and this was one of the shows they watched all the time. Ugh.
