We Need Your Help

I have been volunteering on ProgressiveU for about a year and a half now, and have been a member well over 2 years. I started in the competition just like the rest of you, but stayed due to the great ideas I found here. I've made some wonderful friends over the past couple years on the site, many of whom I would like to remain friends with for life. ProgressiveU has helped me through some difficult times, and I want to help it thrive.

Unfortunately, that is getting more and more difficult by the day as our funding dries up. Over the past few months, we have instituted many ways to get our members involved in the process. We opened a ProgressiveU store on Zazzle, we joined GoodSearch and GoodShop (the former of which is free, but still helps us in the long run), we have done cellphone fundraisers, and we have applied for several grants to help us continue giving out scholarships.

If we don't get a solid source of funding, the Fall 2008 scholarship competition may be our last. So, we are starting an experiment. We have signed up for Fundable, which allows us to raise money based on donations. If we don't meet our goal, no one gives anything. But if we do... we get more funding to give out scholarships.

In this vein, we have created an online fundraiser to help raise funds to award student bloggers for their hard work and dedication, both to ProgressiveU as bloggers and to the wider communities that their ideas and input have benefited. Our preliminary goal is quite small. We would like to raise at least $200.00 (plus $21 to cover the fees associated with the fundraiser) to provide gift certificates to those students and we hope you can help. Anything raised over the $200.00 will be put on reserve for future Blogging for Progress scholarships.

We're asking that everyone who is able pledge at least $10.00 to the fund. If the $200.00 goal is not met by January 19, 2009, no one will be required to contribute anything. If, however, the goal is met, everyone that pledged will contribute their pledged amount to the organization and those gift certificates will be purchased and delivered to deserving students.

In order to do this, we have set up a collection page at Fundable. You can view it and make your pledge at: http://www.fundable.com/groupactions/groupaction.2008-12-29.8838634107

If you cannot afford $10.00 right now, there are other ways to help us out. I hope everyone at least considers using GoodSearch.com and selects ProgressiveU as their nonprofit of choice. You can do it at no cost to you, and it helps us out in the long run. If only 100 people do two searches a day through GoodSearch, we can raise over $700 in the course of one year. It is powered by Yahoo, and functions the same as any other search engine. If you use Firefox or Internet Explorer, you can add toolbars to your browser to make it easier to use this tool. Just imagine what would happen if all 50,000 members did one search a day.

If you have less than $10 to give, please consider donating directly through PayPal (see the block in the sidebar). Perhaps you have a Visa Gift Card that has a small balance left on it... not enough to do you much good, but enough to help us out a little. You can also, of course, ask your friends and family to help out a little. Maybe your Great-Aunt Muriel gives horrible birthday presents, so you can ask for a donation on your behalf instead. Have an old cellphone? Pass it along to us. Any help whatsoever is appreciated.

Please, even if you can't contribute yourself, pass along the information so we can reach as many people as possible.

If you have any questions, you may ask them here or you can email the ProgressiveU Directors (Naomi Leger, Art Morgan, Fallon Glenn and Michelle Knoll) at info@progressive.org.

Thanks in advance from all of us at ProgressiveU for your support!

And you have the courage to pledge $10, that for sure means a lot more.

I'll see what I can do about donation stuff after I get home this evening, but I did post a blurb on my personal blog and added Goodsearch to my toolbar at work again.

C'mon, people! All we need to make the goal is five more people to give $10! That's it! Think about everything ProU's done for you...the knowledge, the experience, the friends...all priceless! $10 is like...the price of a lousy lunch. So what's it going to be? Lousy lunch even though you're just going to complain about it and then be hungry in a few hours anyway or assist ProU keep helping students reach out, discover their dreams, and make something of their lives?

but you don't know everyone's predicament and if they can afford the 10 or even the 5.

there are other ways for those who don't have the money to donate and I just hope everyone uses them, such as Goodsearch and Goodshop.

Where do you eat lunch? I spend less than $10 a day for all 3 meals, and that's with my forking over extra cash for hormone-free milk and chicken. If I happen to spend $10 at Applebee's or something (which, I'll admit, happened a few times immediately after my job offer) I get enough food to last 2 or 3 meals. That cowboy burger is HUGE.

$10 may not seem like a lot, but it does go a long way if you need it to, and a lot of people need it to go a ways. I agree with Asmaw; not everyone can actually just drop $10 because they want to.

But, some people can, and it would be nice if some would consider giving up 3 faux macchiatos from Starbucks in order to donate to a good cause.

Pro U, or sub par, coffee-flavored sugar drinks. Where do you want your money to go?

Trust me, I'm quite aware of how difficult money is to come by and my post isn't really directed towards anyone to make them feel bad. I managed to give $10, but that's just because I got some money from my aunt for Christmas. My family barely manages with the little we have and do, so I can relate. ;) I'm sorry if anyone took offense to this, because I didn't mean for it to be taken like that.

Well, I was basically thinking of like Subway (which is actually pretty good :P)...a foot long, chips, and a drink is like $8+. Then you have the restaurants that are insane...I went to Olive Garden a few months ago and got some pasta and a drink and I think it was $10...and the pasta wasn't really that good. That's all I meant by the lousy lunch.

Again, I didn't mean to offend and I mentioned the lunch thing because it was easiest to relate to (everyone has to eat :P). If you can't donate, then you just can't donate and that's really all there is to it. Don't feel bad, and like Asma said, doing your searches through GoodSearch with ProU is an excellent way to help. :)

I made a pledge. Only $21 more to go!

Everybody dig deep! I'd hate for ProgU to go away. It is too much fun trying to de-program all the progressives here who got a little too much liberal public school brainwashing education.

I love my liberal public school, brainwashing!

Of course you do! It would not have been much of a brainwashing if you harbored lingering doubts or were not comfortable with the integrity of the so-called knowlege that had been etched into your young brain.

It will take you years to discover how much of the so-called facts were in fact mis-information and how many of the ideas were deeply flawed. There is an old song that was popular when I was younger that went something like:

"when I think back on all the crap I learned in highschool ..... it is a wonder that I can think at all".

My job is merely to sew the seeds of doubt. They will likely lay dormant for several years until after you have been away from the daily wash and rinse cycle of the educational establishment and have had a chance to experience the real world including earning your own living and paying taxes. Hopefully you will be successful because there is no fertilizer for the truth like a heavy tax bill.

Thankfully, there's not a lot that can be brainwashed in skills-based medicine, which is the field I'm going into. I have no doubt my ideas about the government will change a lot in the next 10 or so years, though :)

Only $21 more, eh?

I sincerely hope no one pledged just to feel good, secretly hoping that it wouldn't reach the goal... :P

There is no "$21" option... $1 left to meet the goal! :-D

I carry a funny idea, but I need to bring some structure to it, lol.

Going to start-up a party company together with two friends of mine, I guess if the willing creative minds upon this platform can put their input inside our needs, we could easily provide small and large amounts of donations to this platform, even promote this platform while we’re at it.

Our needs would be to find a proper name for our company, party theme’s, new way’s of decorating party interiors, creative ways to make promotion….etc

These are just few of the needs out of many, to have an example on how this could take place, one can take a look at this blog from Edible Woman, lol.

http://www.progressiveu.org/133508-you-are-cordially-inited-my-doomsday-...

The thing which could be helpful is to brainstorm all together! That’s actually the whole point behind my thoughts.

The more successful ideas which flow out of our brain sessions, the more donations will find their way to this platform.

Any suggestions or questions?

It’s a funny idea, but I’m sure it would work out just fine,

Collective consciousness always does.... :-)

Sorry to read this!

I need new visions, I need new ideas, I need new approaches and party styles, I need to know what the most perfect would be like….

So even if you never attended any other party than those in your family life, still I wonder to know, how you or anybody else would picture the best party ever….

I think the Polish people are the best party people on earth. We had substantial Polish immigration into this part of the country about a century ago primarily to work in the coal mines.

Everything about their culture is organized around partying. There is little on earth more fun then a Polish wedding. Their customs are fun, their food is fun, their traditional costumes are fun, their music is really fun and their dancing is hysterically fun.

Typical lyrics to a polka: "Roll out the barrel .... roll out the barrel of fun."

Anything that involves a barrel of beer is going to be fun! And there is something about the music that comes out of an accordian that is just about guaranteed to make a person smile.

I never pass up an invitation to a polish wedding.

Wombels, I think this Party topic should be moved into its own blog entry.

The goal has been met. If you would like to make a pledge, you may continue to do so until the collection closes on January 19, 2009.
