"What a great song!"

We all know how powerful music is and what a lifeline it can be. Unfortunately, radio stations seem to do their best to ruin the experience for us by playing them so often! Nothing against Matchbox 20 or Madonna but every time I hear “3 AM” or “Music” on the radio, I – I can’t stand it. I have heard them too much, and I do that fast and furious fumble with the radio dial to change it to anything else. Sometimes I just turn the radio off. Thankfully, there are other songs that are so good that they never get old. I can hear those songs again and again, for years, and never tire of them.
Like any other self-respecting child of the alternative nation, I still place my hand over my heart at the opening strains of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and Seattle is still the hottest destination in the country. In all seriousness, however, “Black,” by Pearl Jam is one of those songs that I will never tire of, no matter how often I hear it, how old I get. It’s partly so powerful because of the music, the notes themselves, partly from the words, and partly from the memories they evoke.
What is that song for you, dear reader? Not necessarily the one that “got you through” the tough times, (that was Silent Lucidity, for me), or the ones that make you cry because of a poignant time in your life (“I Believe I Can Fly,” for me) but the song that is just good.
