Many people believe that there is a gap between men and women. This gap applies to all aspects of their lives, including the professional world. Researchers and testimonies constantly show that men are paid more for the same job and that women are constantly held down. Many people just talk about this problem with no solution. Some say that the government needs to do something, but there is already a law preventing sexism in the workplace. Some say that women are just unequal and should be paid less, but, as a woman, I know that is not true. I know that I and other women are smarter and harder workers than quite a few men I know. So what can we do about this rift? The only way to close it is to do it ourselves. We cannot depend on the government do nurse our every move. The women who sit there complaining about the inequalities need to get up and do something about it. The only way to bring something as big as sexism down is to fight it and those old white-haired dinosaurs to the ground. As a guitarist in an all-girl band, we have experienced sexism. People normally think as this issue only being in offices but, really, it’s everywhere. The four of us girls find it to our advantage to market the fact that we are all attractive girls and we play metal, a very unusual thing. However, some venues and other bands seem to have problems with us because we are all females. Certain venues refused to book us and bands refused to play with us because we can’t possibly be as good as guys. How can a girl play metal? Faced with this opposition, we were very frustrated. There is a very great venue in Denver (where we live) that all the great local hardcore bands play. Although we may or may not like the venue itself or its management, the shows are always sold out and there is a huge following of kids that go there. Anyone could tell you it’s a great place to market local music. For over a year now, we’ve been trying to get a show at this venue. We would write them frequently and go to shows to talk to the management, who always told us to write to them. After months of non-responsiveness, we gave up for a little while. However, we continued playing shows and promoting better than most other local bands we know. Over last summer, we got a huge following and quickly became another venue’s favourite band because of our dedication and our talent. On a whim, I decided to write to the non-responsive venue again. They wrote back! They noticed our hard work and our huge following, and realized that we weren’t quite as bad as they had thought. Now they’re even working on putting together an all-female show and having us headline it. Now we’ve finally gotten a show at this venue, and it wasn’t by just sitting and whining about it. No, we did something, we worked hard for it and we proved ourselves worthy. This just goes to show how we need to do things ourselves. Women need to stand up in the face of sexism and prove just how good and worthy they are. Looking back at history, the progress that women have made didn’t just happen. We had to work hard for it, and we can’t expect to stop short now.
