Ignorance Is Bliss?

This year is the first time i have ever taken an interest in anything that is going on in the world around me. Now that i'm starting to see the effects of this financial crisis and problems with the economy directly effect me and my life...is seems more important. Before, I seriously just didn't care. I often boasted about not watching the news...because when you come right down to it..the news is just depressing, especially nowadays. But i've learned that you cannot live life that way. You cannot bury your head in a hole and pretend what is going on in the world isn't happening. We are in deep trouble now. I keep reading all of these articles on CNN.com and the Time. com about the economic crisis and how many people are at a lost for what to do. It scares me. I'm 17 years old and I am truly scared for my future. Every adult who knows enough to express outrage has told me that my children and I will be paying off all of this country's debt for years to come. I don't want that. At the beginning i didn't even know that that meant...now that i do...it's just a scary prospect. To know that I am going to have to pay for others' mistakes somewhere down the line...when i wasn't even aware that mistakes were being made!

This is why now i believe that staying aware is important. You cannot be in the dark...not in this day and age. You can't afford to not know what's going on now...it'll surely cost you.

Very well put, but its not like the government is going to come barging down your door demanding you alone fix the world, you know?

Sure it's depressing to watch the news, but what station is going to report on sunshine and rainbows all day? Sure, it's nice to see a little girl reunite with her father who's been on tour all year, and it's awesome to see something go right in this world, but let's not delude ourselves. Things that get enough exposure get attention, and attention brings change, something we obviously need right now.

Nice ending paragraph though, it was a good summary and had a resolute ending.

is a huge problem. A friend of mine was hosting a rally for the Save Darfur movement. Someone actually asked her "who's Darfur?" People who don't bother keeping themselves informed worry me. More young Americans know the characters on the Simpsons than can state the freedoms garunteed by the First Amendment
