There is a genre of books and movies that I love called period pieces. I’m thinking about it right now because I watched Becoming Jane last night. There are so many things to appreciate about that picture – the costumes, the photography, an odd orchestral phrase, and James McAvoy.
Several winters ago, I picked up a Jane Austen book from the library and read it in one weekend, sitting on the couch with my feet wrapped in a blanket. I had tried reading Austen prior, however my attention kept lagging. Not this winter, though. I read straight through every novel.
Over this past summer, I began going through a Henry VIII phase. I read The Other Boleyn Girl (or rather, was forced to read it! I couldn’t put it down! It was as though the book had locked my eyes!) and watched the two seasons of the Tudors pirated by my aunt. Furthermore, it now seems like everywhere I go, there notice more books from other perspectives from that time. For example, Anne Boleyn from the tower, or from the perspective of one of Lady Katharine’s maids.
Are there other novels that you’ve enjoyed, dear reader? I should like to look them up.

I want to read some Alison Weir books (they're historical novels, but I've heard they're very good), but I haven't gotten the chance. I'm getting ready to read Night. Try a list like the BBC Big Read or 1001 books to read before you die if you need more ideas.

She writes great period pieces. Tipping the Velvet is the one I enjoyed most. The BBC made it into a great movie, too. Available on Netflix.
