Recently I sent a personalized e-mail to every single one of my friends telling them exactly why I considered them to be my friends. I found this to be an extremely productive exercise because not only did I give myself a chance to express deep feelings I had toward my friends, it also presented me with the chance to examine my friendships and see what about them drew me to these people and why I bother keeping them in my life. A few people responded, mostly pointing out the randomness of the exercise, one or two responded in kind, telling me why I was their friend. Most ignored me.
I loved this random e-mailing thing because I know if I were one of my friends, I would feel warm and fuzzy knowing why people like me, what my good qualities are, and that people actually care. I also know that sending these e-mails made me feel really good about myself. Perhaps because I was doing something I knew I would appreciate or because I was reaffirming the decision I made when I first decided to start calling these people friends. I learned a lot about myself, and a lot about my friend through examining what I already knew. I think I'll start doing this more often.

That is such a great idea!
For the future, maybe send them a real letter in the mail? Everyone loves getting mail and it just adds a little something special when that mail is not bills! ;-)
"What a crazy random happenstance!"
