The Financial Crisis

There are a few positive effects of the financial disaster although they offer little comfort when one's 401 K has diminished by at least one half of the expected balance. The persons who are unable to make mortgage payments may have difficulty with finding another leap of faith possible when a government has failed them so dramatically. As unemployment rises to an all time low not seen since the Twenties, the poor become the poorest and the middle class become the poor.
The DOW is at the lowest since the other crash and yet our governing body refuses to call this crisis on Wall Street the "D" word. Are we to be reassured by their admitting to a"possible recession"? Perhaps because bodies are not falling from windows on the sidewalks of Wall Street are we to feel more confident that the money crunch is only temporary? Although we may not commit suicide many of us remain perched on the windowsills. Even with the abundance of rhetoric spewing from Washington, people maintain the position that the present administration and the CEO s of large banking institutions are responsible for the mess. This "ball" of irresponsibility has, of course, been thrown into the people's court but citizens have thrown it back over the net.
Consequently the upside is,that since this dilemma became public we have not been as receptive to the government's problem solving techniques. The November election has allowed for a more critical look at the candidates. People are pushing for multiple choices instead of the two party system. Many citizens in this country no longer pacifically accept decisions made by our government.
The good news is that fear brings out the "pack instinct" in humans and anger hopefully motivates them to change. Unfortunately, people have the ability to maintain a false sense of security when others are not as well off financially than they. The questions are many such as, will the status quo return when a portion of financial stability returns? Will the citizens in this country demand that our Constitution be enforced? Has the promise "of the people, by the people and for the people" been fulfilled? Do people realize that if one of these conditions is not met than there is no democracy? How can the taking back of a country be achieved if we never had it to begin with?
