As I picked up the newspaper this morning, the main story was about how the 300 millionth american would be born at 7:46 this morning. It is truly amazing how many people now live in this country. It is also expected that it will be a Hispanic boy in Los Angeles. It's a wonder how they come up with these things, and how they know they can map the exact second that our population will reach 300 million.
As i thought longer, it's all just a very rough estimate. Sure we can predict birthrate and such, but immigration is definitely a wild card. Therefore, these estimates mean nothing to me. The 300 millionth american was born sometime today, or immigrated some time today. This large increase of population will of course create opportunity but also challenge. This will require more jobs, health care, police and fire protection, housing, and more. In the end, I'm not sure if its a good or bad thing.
