AGAIN A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF PEOPLE NOT EVERYBODY. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
I don't understand how people that don't do anything for themselves end up with $700 in food stamps and cash assistance(actual amount). I work at a retail store and I encounter clients that receive $700-$1000 in food stamps. As I interract with them, one thing that alot of them had in common is that TELL ME they Lie on the application. The lies ranges from their household income, and they're "unable" to work. I don't understand how these kind of people are proud to USE OTHER PEOPLE TAXES for their laziness. It frustrates me because I know people that are trying to do the noble thing and need assistance, but are denied because "they make too much" or they are actually telling the truth. I believe that the government needs to make a law to regulate this problem. It's ridiculous if certain people are on assistance for like 5-10 years and haven't progressed much in life. I think their should be a cut off point into the amount a time a person is in assistance EXCEPT FOR SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES such as physical-mental disability, orphanage, foster care etc.
ANOTHER THING THAT FRUSTRATES ME IS THAT when these people(primarily women) that needs food stamps but they look fresh-to-def! Their nails and hair are constantly done, clothes are up to date. BUT WHEN YOU LOOK AT THEIR KIDS!!!, they look raggedy and poor. Another thing that's a pet peeve of mine is when they buy their kids JUNK FOOD WITH THE FOOD STAMPS. If i was to receive a large amount in food stamps, I would make sure that my kids are feed properly and healthy instead of feeding them microwave food on a daily basis.
AGAIN PLEASE READ CAREFULLY WHAT I SAID AND DON'T TAKE IT OUTTA PROPORTION(SP)
BLOGGERS COMMENT AWAY, TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THIS SUBJECT!

Er, how on earth would you know if those people lied on their applications or not?
And I may be poor to the point where I sometimes have nothing in the kitchen but peanuts and pasta and no money to get more food, but that doesn't mean I don't take good care of my body and clothing.
Well if they track you income for taxes then im pretty sure they can track your income for welfare.
I'm not going to judge someone based on what car they're driving or the clothes they're wearing when they pay with food stamps. My brand-new-looking clothes, the ones that everyone most often asks where I got them, come from second hand stores. I can get a full manicure and pedicure for $35 at a small, unknown salon I know of. It's not hard to do your own hair with some good hairspray. It's not expensive to look good.
What frustrates me to no end is when parents come in with their children, throw some junk food, some cereal their kids picked out, and 2 bottles of booze on the conveyor belt, are told they don't have enough with their food stamps, and then make the kid put back the cereal so they can buy their alcohol. There are plenty of places where food stamps are nothing more than glorified gift cards--you can buy anything sold at a grocery store with them--including alcohol and cigarettes.

I'd love some of those food stamps. I'm running out of clean clothes because I don't have money to get detergent. Today I spent the last of my money on food that I'm hoping will last me until I manage to get money again. If not, I'll be living off pasta again.
I used to wash my clothes in the bath tub with dishsoap back when I was making $300 a month too much to qualify for any kind of welfare on my part time, $7.50 an hour job. It works kind of.
When you get a chance, invest in some quart-size freezer bags and cook large quantities of food at a time and freeze the leftovers as individual meals. Potatoes, leeks, vegetable broth, and milk, unbelievably, make a really filling soup that freezes and reheats pretty well. You can make a lot of soup with a 10-pound bag of potatoes and those go on sale for like $2 sometimes. It's a change from pasta. I was also a pretty big fan of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on cheap white bread.
I managed to make about $100 extra every 3 months on http://www.surveyspot.com. It's not much but, sometimes, it meant my car insurance didn't get cancelled because I didn't pay it again.
I'm moved in with my mom for now, until my school starts in August. Most of my classes are at night and online then, and I'm licensed to practice nursing in the state I'm moving to (I did that on purpose before I applied to make it easier to apply for instate tuition) so I don't think I'll have a problem finding somewhere to work part-time with a decent salary while I'm in school... even so, I'm on edge waiting for my FAFSA results to come back and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be going for a student loan just so I don't have to worry about finances while I'm in school. Just in case graduate classes are stressful enough without working too.
I hope your situation improves soon. Paycheck to paycheck is not a fun life. :-/

I don't eat much and there's foodbanks, so that's okay. Laundry is really annoying though. I do have money on my laundry card though and sometimes people leave their detergent there so I'm hoping someone will do that tomorrow.
Try this:

If you don't want to go to all the trouble, you could try a tiny bit (and i mean tiny, it gets really sudsy!) of dishsoap in the machine with a little baking soda. Or baking soda and a few fine shavings of some leftover bar soap. Also, read this blog:

I think that we do not know all the facts on this to know anybody lies on the application. Maybe there have been some that have but that is something I would have no knowledge of. There are unforeseen situations that come up and people do need help with assistance, that is why it is there. If somebody takes pride in themselves and are really trying to better themselves, that is a very important aspect to look at. Because someone does there hair or has nails doesn't say they are paying for it. Many people color, perm and curl there own hair. Many women do there own nails. I think they should be respected for taking pride in themselves rather than not combing there hair and having dirty nails. I really do not think they should be judged for this. There was probably a time when they needed to ask for help, where they felt helpless. As the old saying goes, "Don't judge a book by it's Cover", you never know what's inside of it. I hope you never have a tragedy that happens in your life that cause you to ask for help but I think until you have been in this situation, you can not relate.
I was doing some reading for a Public Law class I'm taking, and I came across an article about how most agencies that dole out assistance are highly underfunded. That means they're most likely to make mistakes and reject people who deserve the assistance, and accept people who really don't.
That was one of my main purpose for thisarticle. But some people took it way out of porportion!DOING THE DAMN THING!!
I appreciate the spirit of your post. I get that you are trying to say that the system is easy to take advantage of, and that some (not all) do, while others get the shaft. I agree with you. I want to say, though, that disenfranchised people will assert their power in whatever way is available to them. If they have been raised in generational poverty, then "working" the system might be all they know about getting by. The educational system routinely fails people in poverty, and they are using their intelligence in a logical way--not an ethical way, but a logical way.
Second, I don't know about the rules from state to state, but in a lot of systems, food stamps cover very little fresh produce, lean meats, and good dairy. And when it is covered, what are you going to choose? If a bunch of grapes costs as much as two bags of Doritos, and the Doritos fill you up more, what are you going to choose? Processed foods cost less. I'm not saying it's the wise decision, but I can see how people might come to that decision.

I just finished a blog about how much cheaper it is for the working poor to just buy fast food at dollar menus than to actually make a healthy meal. Working poor often can't get assistance.
Food stamps here buy any FOOD ITEM. No cigarettes, no alcohol, and for some reason no energy drinks... I was in that system a few years ago, but they cut me because I get federal grants for school. Apparently, in order to get grants and food stamps at the same time, you have to have kids. Excuse me for being responsible...

AT LEAST you understand where I'm coming from. I understand if processed food comes cheapter but don't complain when your child is obese or unhealthy, you understand what I'm saying. DOING THE DAMN THING!!
Do you know expensive it is to feed a family? Any clue at all? Most of the time, processed food is all people can afford and/or know how to make. Nutrition and cooking classes should be a free service for parents. Hell, for everyone.

Apparently, you haven't really studied the topic. There is social security, SSI (supplemental security), SSDI (disability), and the general FSSA welfare program. FSSA supplies food stamps, Medicaid, and cash assistance.
FSSA works with poor families with new kids which sounds like that's what you were partially talking about. There is a time frame for people to be off the system. It's not a permanent thing.
FSSA also works with the other groups- SS, SSI, and SSDI. These monthly payments are generally quite low, and assistance is often necessary. If your doctor deems you permanently disabled, you still have to have your doctor fill out new forms every few years.
The government does try to catch lies. A friend's neighbor was on disability for a back injury. He initially couldn't work, but was fine within a few months. He started working for a buddy under the table. I don't know who does the investigations, but they had pictures of him on his motorcycle and at his new construction job. He was fined severely.

I know about those programs. But my issue is when people LIE on it and STAY on it for a long time. Meaning people that don't deserve / can do good for their ownselves, it take advantage of if and stay on it for a long time. I understand that people needs help in the beginning or they are falling into hardships, BUT to overdo it because that person got lazy and comfortable, that's not fair. DOING THE DAMN THING!!
There is a time limit on FSSA programs and WIC. Disability requires doctor's notes every so often, especially for temporary injury. Sure, there will always be people taking advantage of everything, and no one can find all of them.

I know how expensive it can get, but is consuming proccessed food daily worth the damaging effects in the long run? Yeah it can keep you full right now but later on, a person will have to go to the emergency room for clogged artreries(sp). If a person shops very carefully with their money, they can buy REAL food, It can be done. Cause with the limited amount of money my stepmom was making at mcdonalds, she made sure that food was fresh or would cook large so it can stretch over a period of days. DOING THE DAMN THING!!
I really do. It's kind of sad that people don't pay attention to what they're feeding themselves or their families. There needs to be a program on nutrition, budgeting food money, and cooking. I can't believe how many people have no clue how to cook anything outside of the microwave!

I may be a bit late to respond to the original blog, but I do understand where you are coming from. Not just food stamps either, social security as well. It deeply frustrates me to know that there are many people living on dollars a day for whatever reason, be it that they are disabled, a single parent, stuck in a rut, etc...It frustrates me even further to know that SOME people are taking advantage of what the government is offering. I know many people who are able bodied, some even with a college education, that are taking advantage of this system. They are too lazy, and selfish to get a job...I cannot imagine living my life off of an income meant for someone else(who really needs it)...
SOMEONE COMPLETLY UNDERSTANDS MY WHOLE PT of this blog

I owe you an apology. I misinterpreted what you were saying. Sorry. I guess I read your post too fast.

I understand your view of it, but I think someone took your blog down below. Don't go bashing on the blogger but clarify what you meant so we all can get a complete understanding. Its the person down below me that probably misunderstood it. The blogger has a
next to her name. Also, i defended your quote and I want to make sure that I'm right. DOING THE DAMN THING!!
I read your blog and I made a comment on it.
You don't think it's right to use food stamps because she took a bath and got dressed? Go up and ask her who does her nails? Where'd she get her hair cut? Tell her you love it. I'm sure she'll let you know you can get one too from her sister who also does her nails for nothing. She got her pretty top at the local thrift store's 50% discount day. Her kids look raggedy because they play so hard and are wearing hand-me-downs from their older brothers, sisters and cousins.
If you have never been that poor, you will never know how hard these women struggle.
I recommend my blog to all of you who like to label single mothers as users and losers.
I'm a fan of you! Good reply.
