“If You Wanna Make The World A Better Place… Take A Look At Yourself And Then Make A Change I'm Gonna Make A Change,… For Once In My Life It's Gonna Feel Real Good, Gonna Make A Difference Gonna Make It Right . . .” - Michael Jackson (Man In The Mirror)
I know, I know. How can I expect anybody to read or take my blogs seriously when I quote Michael Jackson? Well, these particular lyrics are applicable to my snippet for today, change. I am talking about a personal change that affects the world, one person, one family, one community, at a time.
I have written blogs about health and nutrition and I have read blogs about the environment and the affects of humans on it. It was not until I saw some commercials on the TV that it occurred to me to change and that I could actually make a difference. This change in myself, that I plan because of here, will spread to my husband (poor guy) and my children and who knows to where from them.
There was a commercial that talked about energy needs stating something like there being enough oil to supply 6 million people for sixty years. My initial thought was ‘oh that is more then enough’ then my mind turned on and told me that is a finite amount and what about my kids and their kids? To what effect will this have on the earth and its environment?
Then there was a Brita commercial….actually two. One started saying “two hours in a meeting” the other started with “eight hours of sleep”. Then they both pan out to just the bottle of water that you had hardly noticed and ended with “A life-time in a land fill”. I was floored I never thought of that this way.
I am a huge fan of drive the kids to were ever so that they can play. I am an even bigger fan of bottled water since I cannot stand tap water. I never thought of what happens to the bottle once I am done. Thanks to ‘Carrot’ I know what it takes to get that bottled water to my store and myself to the bottle and it home.
So, starting from when I get home, I will look at me in the mirror and make some changes. I plan on limiting my driving errands to one time a week. I will get local food stuff in season. I will use my PUR filter (I bought it for the babies water source) to fill up my empty bottles for my water instead of getting new bottles every time. I will teach my kids during nature walks to be mini-tree huggers and bike riders instead of driving them in my super carbon-releaser to a park to over ten miles away. We have a few parks within kiddo walking distance.
The hardest change for my family I think will be with what we eat. My husband is a hard core junk food junkie. The kids are probably use to their prepared packaged grub since I have been gone for so long. I am actually excited to pick up the health in my and my kid’s lives and get back to the basics.
I also plan on lower our technology use. Since we do not pay for our utilities we have a bad, bad, bad habit of letting things stay on all day (lights) and running water even when we can conserve. I can switch the way we do the dishes to limit the refuse released into the water systems. The Water situation can be an entire blog all by itself…probably for another day.
I am really concerned about how we think that we will have enough to get us by without a half thought about what would happen during our children’s and grandchildren’s life. It is like we do not care about all that. We need to look at ourselves and do something to change and improve, I am starting with me. Will you be inspired?

I enjoyed reading this. It reminded me that I can do a lot more too! It also reminded me of an episode of Cheers! in which Frasier Crane gets all upset trying to explain the difference between 'Making change" and "making a change." It's hilarious! And I'm really old...I don't know if anyone here will have a clue what I'm talking about.

Ah Cheers! Good ole Frazier! I guess that means I am old too.
I changed my title to reflect and or include the diffrence....the blog is about making a change that will hopefully make change...or at least I can only hope.
Thanks

I laughed out loud when I saw the title change! It wasn't a hint or anything. Just something that pooped in my head...like that damn Michael Jackson song that keeps showing up in everyone's blogs! I had just shaken it off, a week after sawaboof quoted it, and here it is, back again! Thanks a lot!

Someone just quoted it not to long ago!....and here I was thinking I am different. I guess I am, just like every one else right;)
Now I have to check out sawaboof.

You had a completely different perspective on it. Hers was about homelessness.

Sorry...
it was a toss up between the Michael Jackson lyrics and some Ted Leo and the Pharmacists lyrics... but the song I was thinking of using by them is actually about eating disorders, so I went with Man in the Mirror. :-/
I could put the Hamster Dance back in your head, though, if you prefer...

Well, since EW's already mentioned my recent use of these lyrics, I'll just say that these Michael Jackson lyrics don't take away from the seriousness of your blog at all.
He performed this particular song in his Dangerous World Tour, from which all proceeds were given to various charities, including his Heal the World charity which, sadly, I don't believe exists anymore. It's purpose was to get kids to change the world around them.
Michael Jackson is not exactly my favorite singer, but I do like the lyrics for this song. The music video for the song isn't too bad either.
Also, good for you for changing your lifestyle for the better! :-)
