Progress is a slow and sometimes painful process. Progress deals with the development of anything and everything. This essay is in progress; my dinner in the oven is in progress; my senior year of High School is almost done with progress; our presidential election is in progress. Many things grow and progress.
Dictionary.com defines "progress" as "a movement toward a goal or to a further or higher stage."
Progress is the necessary evolution of social inequalities and racism in America. If we are ever to cure this disease of fear and discrimination, progress must occur. We must progress towards understanding and the desire to level playing fields. Though perfect equality is our goal, progress is the slow and painful journey in-between now and then.
Progress is work. Social equality doesn’t come easy here in America, where inter-racial hatred is still alive and well. Stereotypes still exist, and some members of the older generations are hardened into their old beliefs. We have to work to repair the damage done in the past and be understanding.
Progress is time. This isn’t going to happen overnight. With each generation we get closer to our goal. But a mindset isn’t something that can be changed instantaneously. It will take several generations to change the mindset of people from prejudice to equality.
Progression requires discussion and action. This is where we can all make a contribution to the necessary evolution towards our goal. Discussion leads to understanding and the demolition of fear of the unknown. Without it there would be no change.
