College: Don't Just Let It Be 'School'

Two years ago when I was graduating from high school, I was so glad that summer was about to come. But then I realized that I had at least 4 years of school left which made me think for a second: what did I just get myself into? But now I've realized that college is a lot more than just school; it's an opportunity that has endless possibilities.
What upsets me is the fact that so many students take it for granted. There isn't a day where I don't pass people who are talking about the party they went to last night, or the homework assignment they blew off because they didn't care. Don't get me wrong, there are days I dread going to class, but I've decided to take advantage of my college years. Not only have I learned about my fields of study, but I've discovered that there is much more to this world than I ever imagined, and it comes with problems.
I think that main thing that college students should discover is that there is a world out there, waiting to be changed. Even if it only means you volunteering your time for a weekend, you can still make a difference in the world. Get involved in something! Not only will you be helping out, but you will be building your communication skills, which we all know is extremely helping when applying for a job. Use every moment you are given to better yourself as well, so that you are ready for your career. Take your projects and make them something to talk about! There are tons of internships that ask to see some of your work, so use every class assignment as that opportunity.
I'm not saying that you have to enjoy every class you take, but don't just sit in your dorm room and do nothing! College is the time to learn about yourself and the world you live in, not just the stuff you see in books.

Yea I understand what you're saying. I ran into this problem in highschool, but I just put school above it. Partying is lame anyway.

Partying isn't lame. You don't have to drink or do drugs to party. You can have tons of fun at parties if you are with a group of people you really enjoy!

College is more than just school, it's a learning experience that will never be forgotten. As a college freshman I have still found the importance of that four more years of learning. At first I was discouraged about those four more years, but then I realized it was different from high school and decided to add six more so I can get my Ph.D. in History! I agree it is important to volunteer and take internships. I volunteered at the Hillary Campaign and plan on doing the Model UN next year and the Washington semester (internship in Washington DC) my junior year, would have next year but they would let me. =(

But it is also important to have a little good clean fun! Every Thurs. my friends and I go shagging!! We are still kind of learning how though.
