Get a cell phone or help a homeless shelter?

Every year at our high school, we have a weeklong event called GOFA, Give One For All.  The week sponsors many different activities to raise funds for local shelters and charities.  We have had a problem at our school getting students to donate money to this cause.  I find this truly upsetting.  The same students who complain to me because they have no money to donate also complain to me about the long hours they work at their various jobs.  When asked why they work so many long hours at their job I get very common answers.  Students have a need to pay for their new cars, for their new cell phones, and the gas and bills that come with these items.  My only question is this, if these students can afford to pay a couple of hundred dollars a month on cars and phones, how can they not afford to donate a few bucks once a year to charity?  This is something I will never understand.  Although I do have a job and do pay for a cell phone, I also make it a point to donate to this fund during GOFA week, as well as throughout the year.  I also make it a point to do volunteer work.  I only wish that I could find a way to spread this feeling to my fellow students.
