I don't know who has heard about cute little McKay, the founder of the no cussing club... I just found out about the club. I personally don't think it's a bad idea. Cuss words are completely ugly and unnecessary, yet overly used. I myself am a pretty big user of such words, but what McKay says holds some truth. When I drop an F-bomb or an S-bomb it doesn't make me feel like Einstein. Typically I almost immediately feel bad and find myself looking around to make sure I haven't offended anyone; because they are very offensive to some people.
I admit that I use cuss words when I'm frustrated or upset, but I don't like to use them in every other sentence. I think it becomes very offensive when people use profanity just to use it. Out of the millions and millions of words there are to choose from, why pick the most unintelligent ones? They show signs of anger and weakness in arguments. Some say they cuss to relieve stress and to release building stress and overcome outbursts. Hello? When someone cusses me out, the last thing I feel is calm. It gets me going even more. There are plenty of stress relievers to go to when on the verge of exploding. Go for a run, sit by yourself, take a walk, SMOKE SOME WEED if it comes down to it.
Of course smoking weed isn't the healthiest alternative. McKay is right when he says it's unnecessary and very unattractive.
no cussing club?

Personally, I think that swear words are no different than any other word or sound. People completely invent the meaning, and they mean different things to different people. I don't think its the greatest when they're used rudely, but I try to stick away from rude comments in general.
No different? Agreed the word Fuck can be used as a verb, noun, adjective, etc. in it's many different forms. It's a pretty amazing word I guess. You definitely can't use it as you would most other words. I guess in that sense it may be different. While people may invent meanings, the fact still remains that they are offense, and also used in offensive ways. Yes, there are other words and phrases that when arranged properly can sting just as bad as swearing at someone. The difference is that they are used offensively on purpose, and too much.
I feel more intelligent when I'm swearing at my chemistry homework. You try working the goddamned thermodynamics problem, stuggling with the fucking laws of thermochemistry, explaining that the entropy of a substance will decrease because of a change in state and that the enthalpy is going to be less than zero because there isn't enough fucking free energy.

I don't see the big deal with cussing...I was raised around it so naturally I do it...a lot...but I can control it...I obviously don't burst out in swear words in the middle of a debate round...but out of formal situations I drop the f-bomb a lot...and I mean a lot...I don't think it makes people sound less intelligent not if what they're saying is intelligent...if everything else they're saying is dumb however of course they'll sound dumb...and cussing does make me feel less stressed b/c those are words that you can put extreme emotion into...it gets the frustration out...I don't think it should matter as long as it's not in a formal situation
Now thats a good fucking blog!

no need to completely throw it back in my face. i think what the kid is doing is sort of nice. i stand by my opinion regardless of what you say. and thanks, i have a new opinion of you.
I was just being funny.

What's wrong with using a swear word as an adverb? "The flower was incredibly beautiful" versus "The flower was fucking beautiful." Personally, earlier this week I read aloud one of my final papers in class. In it was the word "shitting." (The paper, if you're interested, is a different version of "Requiem for the Silent". The "shitting" in question is towards the end of Part II, that part I didn't really change at all for the reading.) It was simply the most appropriate word for the situation.
when did i ever say it was wrong to use the word as an adjective? "the flower was fucking beautiful." now that conveys A LOT of passion. sounds more like sarcasm, but i guess to each his own. it's when people over use the words that i don't understand. just to throw them out because it makes people sound "bad ass" or because that's what they grew up around. yeah, i grew up around a lot of fighting and use of the f-word in particular. it just turned me off even more to cussing. it's over used and not very intelligent. and sorry, out of all the words in the human language you find "fucking" the most appropriate to describe something.... maybe you should increase your vocabulary.
It's a word. How can a word be intelligent or not? Is the word "word" intelligent? O.o
If I am writing a personal essay in my own voice, I will definitely use swear words such as "fucking". It sounds fake otherwise.
And my teacher (and this, mind you, was in an academic writing class in college) had no problem with my use of "shitting". She thought the narrative was great.
I did too. I think you are a great writer. I'm not attacking you... Read the rest of mine and Vern's discussion if you don't see where I'm coming from. Words can be intelligent. Maybe not the word "word." The feeling behind the word makes it intelligent. You make a good point. If you can use fucking passionately... I'm sure I could... Good for you. I'm just saying there are PLENTY of words you can use. I've read your writing, you use your words intelligently. I think it's about the writer/speaker. I'm just saying most of society doesn't use such words in those ways. They use them in vulgar and rude ways.
In that case, it's a problem with how people choose to express themselves, not with a particular word.
Then going off of that... Why do people choose to express themselves with words that mean such rude things? Bitch, Cunt, Fuck, Shit... They aren't always necessary. I guess what I should have said is I have a problem with the way people use them. My mistake. When they are used to hurt and destroy I'm against that. Words are powerful.
Bitch has dozens of meanings, only one of which is "female dog", only some of which are rude, many of which are friendly. "Fuck" doesn't really just mean "to fornicate" anymore. "Shit" means "feces". What's so horrible about saying "Feces!" when you stub your toe or something? Or using the word "shit" instead of "poop"?
Bitch is rarely used as a friendly term where I'm from. We use it as in "Bitch, step off." Or, "you BITCH, you slept with my man?" More like a violent approach. Fuck... I don't think I've ever used it in the fornication use of the word. I tend to hear it more in the context of "what the FUCK did you just say to me?" Again... Pretty violent, there's usually a fight after that. Shit... Agreed... It's not that bad. Like I said down there, I used it in my paper. A college course probably not so unlike the ones you are taking. My teacher didn't dock me either. There are many words I could have used though.
okay... i can see why you thought i was attacking you. let me back track and say i meant what i said as a general statement... not a personal one.
it's not a matter of increasing your vocabulary...you just said that using the word as an adjective conveys a lot of passion...so if it's used appropriately then whatever...and just b/c you got turned off of it by being around it doesn't mean everyone does...like I said...I was raised around it...and other things and I wasn't turned off to any of them...it shouldn't matter if someone uses the f-word in every sentence or not..that's their choice....maybe they do want to sound bad-ass...or maybe they already are...we shouldn't condemn their decisions on it
I was being sarcastic with my passionate comment.... I have no problem with people who think they need to use it... Feel free. I was just agreeing with the kid, and I see he makes a point. I'm glad you weren't turned off from it; feel free to continue to use those words. As for me... I don't think they are necessary. They can be rude and hurtful, and usually are directed to be used just that way. If you feel you need to use them, power to you I guess; it's not going to change my mind on the topic. I just don't get why people use them in hateful mean ways. Don't we all hate each other enough?

I'm not trying to say you didn't make the right decision for you...just that it's not right say somethings about people's use of certain derogatory words...and I think that we absolutely do hate each other enough...but I also think the use of swear words to portray hate is better than committing acts of physical violence..but yes we do hate too much
I agree. Acts of physical violence are a lot worse than using swear words. Look, use the words as much as you want, any way you want. I know you are probably a smart person, you know when it's appropriate and when it's not. At least consider your environment or audience when you use them. Not saying in anyway that you don't or wouldn't, that was just a general addition.
I'd believe it was a general addition b/c it's evident that some people don't think of this first...but at the same time I've seen instances when this actually works out pretty well for them...somehow
Like when? I think when people burst out in fits of cussing rages like in malls or stores it's totally unacceptable. We have a public transportation system called MAX where I live and it's so sad to use. There are people on there who drop every kind of bomb and there are little kids around. I took my little friend Alex, a little 4 year old, to the zoo. We rode the train and I'm sure he heard just about every word in the book. Like I said, I don't take much offense when people use it in moderation, but to just go on and on right in front of a 4 year old is a bit ridiculous.
yeah see that's a bit out of control...but I've seen people cuss in debate and speech rounds and it ended up making them look way more passionate and intelligent and they won rounds from it...and one of my coaches has been known to do it as well...he works for Bill Gates to end racism..and it was just those actions that got him noticed and got him his job
I'm sure when used in correct context it works out very nicely. Like in debates... I probably wouldn't use them unless I was pretty heated. I would have to be REALLY heated actually. I'm talking about more of your every day general sense. I used "shit" in a paper once and in the context it was okay, but it wasn't necessary.
haha yeah see that's understandable...I actually think I may have said shit once in a debate round...probably didn't mean it though
Hey, when you get heated... What can you do? I have a horrible case of road rage... I cannot help it. My boyfriend is scared to ride with me in rush hour. Haha.
haha nice...yeah like tonight I'm pretty heated about the creation and evolution thread...cussing to myself right now actually...but I think it's okay in this instance...no one else can hear me...lol
haha, yeah... well at least you're being considerate now right? my blog didn't completely suck right? haha. no... i'm sure you were considerate before you even read this.
oh no your blog didn't suck at all...I wouldn't have left a comment on it to start with if I didn't like it...and yes I was considerate before this...lol
i love this site. the arguments and the discussions that happen here. sometimes i feel like my blogs aren't interesting, but i think we had a nice discussion on here. i like to write blogs and read what people think. sometimes i post blogs on things that i haven't formed strong opinions for, you know. just getting my feelings out and hearing what people have to say about them. the truth is that i have one of the worst mouths you'll probably ever hear. but i don't like talking like that. it's just what i know. i know thousands of words, and i shouldn't limit myself to the ones that every one hears constantly. i love reading what people had to say about it. every one was right. in their own ways. i feel like some people just commented for the bonus 10 points. but i'm glad you and i were able to carry on a discussion and talk it out. it was cool.
yeah I know what you mean about carrying on a convo...my opinion is if you don't really have something to say...don't comment...haha
playing devil's advocate huh?...I tend to do that on occasion as well...it keeps things interesting...
and as for posting blogs on things you aren't really sure of...I know exactly what you mean...hence my most recent blog...I feel like it's a good way to get feedback and help you form opinions on things...it's really helpful
yeah i read it. i hope my thought helps a little bit.
yeah thanks ashley...it definitely did...
btw...today I kinda was thinking about this blog...I was around a bunch of guys that cuss non-stop...and I was able to understand a lot better where you originally came from with this blog...they were clearly over using some words...some words I really really hate too...and I was like...oh now I get it
Good! I'm glad! It's like Kiota kind of said, if you use the word and it has passion and voice behind it, great. I'm glad that you can find a beautiful way to use an ugly word. That takes talent. Most of the time they aren't used in such ways. It's then it becomes unpleasant to be around. I can't forget the day I took my little four year old buddy to the zoo and I'm sure he learned every bad word every thought of on that train ride. I had to talk louder and louder so he wouldn't listen to them.
yeah it's things like that that make me understand where you are coming from...it's just harder for me to see because my whole life it's just seemed so natural and no one has ever really questioned my use of a swear word...at school, at home...everyone just kind of accepts it
I know... That's what's kind of sad about it. These words that mean horrible things, some of them, are just casually thrown into our daily language. I wonder if Shakespeare or Twain would talk like this. I've always wanted to have a conversation with a great writer. I doubt they are anything like the rest of us.
haha you'd be shocked to find out they are...I've talked to a few authors...some obscure but some well known (like James Patterson)...and they all actually seem relatively normal...but I'm sure some are way different...not gonna lie though...it would be hilarious to hear Shakespeare or Twain casually cussing...cuz it's unimaginable
now that i think of it... Mark Twain wouldn't be a shocker.... But William... That would be pretty funny.
haha yep it would be hilarious...I wonder if some of those great literary minds did use language like that..but I'm sure it wasn't nearly as crude
Read Letters from the Earth; It's Twain casually cussing.
