This is going to sound quite cliche, but after getting the following email today, I couldn't in good conscience not speak up from my little cubby hole in Missoula, Montana.
EARTH DAY 2008--April 22 is Earth Day. Write to your elected officials and let them know your thoughts on all things environmental: pollution, alternative energy, global warming, and whatever else comes to mind. Use our Bill Search tool to find environmental legislation and our Vote Search tool to see how your representatives voted.
Earth Day Alert
My response? Golly, it was so easy and energizing to write to my representative in the house. He's a filthy conservative (gets drunk in public and makes inflammatory statements about Muslims and I can't think of an issue in which he represents me well). But my feeling on writing is not complex. Articulating your views to your elected officials is basic and essential. It's the age-old lesson. If you're a tree, your leafy green stock cannot be appreciated if you're not seen. Anyways, here was my letter on Earth Day, 2008.
April 22, 2008
Dear Mr. Dennis Rehberg,
I am a constituent from Western Montana. Having read about your recent
lack of support for H.R.5351 Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax
Act of 2008 at the tail end of February has me concerned.
Congressional votes that extend direct and indirect tax subsidies to old
technology energy sources (petroleum, coal and nuclear) will not earn you
the continued support of Montanans who live in the most beautiful state in
the union.
Your failure as a representative to look towards a more sustainable
future-- to not back federal legislation that supports the type of energy
that has enthusiastic and realistic support in Montana on Earth Day--
makes me question whether you even think forward to the day when resources
are scarce. And it makes me think you're a self-proclaimed plunderer of
the Earth.
Your voting record on renewable energies presents a nasty stain. I suggest
you clean it. Or you will lose my support as a constituent.
Sincerely,
Maximillian Smith
