The First Amendment to the United States Constitution states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," and the Declaration of Independence states "we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." In addition, it was ruled in the Supreme Court Case of Loving v. Virginia that "The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men," by Justice Earl Warren in 1967. So why is it that same-sex couples cannot marry?
One arguement is that by definition marriage is the union of a man and a woman; another arguement being that it is "unholy." Considering the previously stated issue of Seperation of Church and State, why would religion hold back legalization of same-sex marriages? Or for that matter why would it hold back Polygamist marriages? Since it is not required that you be blessed by a Church (regardless of the religion it's based on) why would it prevent two men, or two women from marrying? Churches still recognize a man and a woman as being married, regardless of religion, so why can it not hold true that the country acknowledge any two people who wish to wed?
The answer being that we do not truely have a seperation of Church and State. This is why children are ridiculed in classrooms for not reciting the Pledge of Allegiance because they do not wish to vow to "God." I'm not saying that we should change all of the currency along with the Pledge of Allegiance, but perhaps allow a bit more tolerance to those who do not wish to follow those beliefs. This country in itself should be especially accepting of someone's want or not to practice religion because it being the reason this country was founded in the first place.
All in all it comes down to the question of why not? It doesn't hurt anyone. If we're to continue along saying that same-sex marriages are simply not to be allowed, them perhaps there should be some new Amendments to the Constitution.
