A system is already in place to prevent illegal immigration, the passport document. It is used in some form in every country except this one to prevent illegal immigration. As a nation of gypsies (we want the right to freedom of the road) we do not want to implement passport checks and road blocks. If every citizen of this country had to have papers at all times to travel, and by travel I mean even just to the grocery store, the problem of illegal immigration would just disappear. Of course so would my peace of mind. But with the war on Iraq and terrorists around every corner wouldn’t you like to know that everyone on the street is checked out by the government? Of course the passport office would have to have millions in funding. However, it would be cheaper then coming up with a completely new office to deal with making paperwork on every American. One new office would have to be made anyway, those not eligible for a passport would have to get a Pass that means that they cannot leave the country.
This passport system would make it more likely at first that people would go on vacation. With the war on terror escalating though this tend would be unlikely to continue. Possibly, more would vacation in Canada. Although, the VACATION AT HOME ads would take care of that, if the ads said CHEAPER to vacation in YOUR CITY. EG the SEE LANSING, MI ad that goes out every summer.
The police already check for the Driver’s License every time they stop you. You just have to go to the station and show your License to a clerk right now. It would not be much more of a step to show a passport and License, of course of everyone in the car. THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO BE WITHOUT ID. There is an ID you can apply for that is not a Driver’s License. In Michigan it is called a MI ID.
Road blocks to check for ID could be erected near military bases if necessary. The funding to handle the deportation of illegal immigrants would have to go to police departments, to fund the holding of illegals till deportation. Before this is implemented, the holding cells will have to be enlarged to handle the large influx of people that will have to be Tried and sentenced to deportation. This will interrupt the lives of US citizens minimally if the passport system is advertised largely enough. Also, if a year is waited for implementation after it is required to have Passport to Canada.
Let me reinterate- THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO BE WITHOUT ID.

Hm, maybe after that we could set up cameras on every street corner, or maybe implement a bar code system where every US citizen wears a collar around their neck with a bar code and when the police scan it, it gives them your criminal record. It could also be used to find out what kind of books you check out at the library, what kind of things you're buying at the store, what movies you're going to see. Nothing better than a government that cares about its citizens so much as to watch their every move.

We already have numerous pieces of identification which can be used to prove our citizenship. I agree with embryo... the National ID is just a better and more organized way for the government to become Big Brother.

Ahem...American Citizens do have a fundamental right to privacy, and are not required to have ID or any other kind of "papers," thank you Mr. Big Brother. Granted, it can be pretty inconvenient not to have some form of government issued ID, but one of the benefits of living in a (theoretically at least) free society is that you don'y have to justify your actions to anyone else, and especially the government, until after there is a reasonable suspicion that you have done something wrong.
And, since one cannot just look at a person and tell whether they are a citizen or not, it makes it very difficult to catch illegal immigrants after they cross the border into our territory. Violating the rights of actual citizens is not the way to stop illegal immigration. Reforming our irrational immigration policies and actually enforcing those policies that aren't, and most importantly exercising some real control over our borders is what we need to do.
One cannot protect Liberty by taking away the rights of citizens.
