I hate No Child Left Behind

Tagged:  •

No Child Left behind is a worthless program that does nothing but make public schools worse. This might have been just one of those ways that Bush tried to help his publicity by acting like he cared for our schools. Let me describe what it has done to my high school in plain english...FUCKED iT UP! We have kids shipped in from I don't know where that only cause problems. The schools those kids attended were horrible so maybe we should waste tax money and ship them half way across the city to another school so they can ruin it in hopes of making them better. All of this is so unbelieveably unneccessary. Almost all of these kids have no hope, and now they are causing the "better" school to become a failing school...great. Let's face it, a school full of bad students CANNOT be fixed by taking them to a better school. I really think we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

I am no fan of NCLB either. You have a valid point, one that's often overlooked--students who don't want to learn won't learn, and penalizing schools and teachers for that is beyond stupid, it is, as you said, "shooting ourselves in the foot." Self destructive, doing nothing to help anything, time and money wasting, and utterly pointless.

I have to agree with you guys on this that NCLB is the worst thing created. I have seen kids fail and still graduate at my high school. They take a few alternative high school classes and make the credits back up to make the school look good to the government. I plan to become a teacher is about five years and I only see politics in play here. There is no real benfit for the students that just do not want to learn. It does not help the excellent students either.

Yup.. our school district only cares about test scores. Teachers pretty much teach us to tests so everyone passes it. And we can re-take them if we fail.
And our district doesn't believe in giving out 4s or 5s because according to them "everyone is suppose to pass."
It's pretty f-ed up!
Education has become so political.. it's such a joke.

I wish there was something that could be done about the education system, but honestly, I'm not sure what reforms would actually work. I mean, I can think of plenty of things that SHOULD happen--but they'd never be enacted. We'd never get past the corruption...

(sorry for the two posts, double-posted on accident, found I couldn't delete this, so at least it says something different than the first post...sorry.)

It's great to hear the views of high school "Students"....I majored in secondary education-until I realized the whole "political bullcrap" that comes with the job. I've talked to many teachers who feel the same way!
