Have you ever thought about your Internet Footprint?

Millions of social networks, forums, and accounts all requiring a username, password and email. I usually use the same username or a variation of it; Simmons, Dr. Simmons, DocSimmons, etc and I think of all the information I have put on the internet. Every single digg, every little wise ass comment that I thought was so damn funny, every blog posting, every piece of ‘art’ added to deviant art, every video to my YouTube account all of it a reflection of my personality. And yet I am not alone millions of people contributing more every day.

People revealing things about themselves with the security of anonymity, it’s kind of exciting to think about. Sometimes I worry that the freedom of remaining anonymous will be lost and we will look around at our neighbors and friends and realize how weird we all really are. And at the same time I have no problem attaching my real name to the ending credits of an absolutely bizarre YouTube film I made.

So what about you? How much stuff have you added, how much of who you are is out there? How many accounts and pseudo-names do you have? Just a thought.

As part of the generation that has had the internet for most of my life, I think it is all a very interesting experiment that is happening. How much will the next generation put out there for the world to see?

I did not even get into Myspace or Facebook, because…. Well I think you folks are better than that. No offense I understand how people use those sites to keep in contact with distant friends but the egotistical attention whores seem to drown out those civilized applications.

I've added a lot of stuff, but I don't mind the "fame". Someday I'll let you guys hear my real name and see how many people actually know me or know of me.

I'll be honest... I'm a Facebook junkie. xD I have no life, so that might be the cause...

But now that I stop and think about it... Holy crud, I have a LOT on Fanfiction... And a good bit on both YouTube AND Veoh... And I'm easing my way into deviantart... and I've got a freewebs site...

Wow, I'm leaving behind quite a footprint. And yet it all seems to go unnoticed...

Hehe, thanks for the intriguing and thought-provoking blog!

And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.

It is amazing what you can find out about people searching a nickname. People do tend to let a little bit more of their personalities shine on the internet than they ever would in the "real" world. Fortunately for me, I don't care what too many people think of me ;) Life is way too short to worry about what other people think. Good topic for a blog, original!

I'd say I'm an exception to the personality thing. I let more personality shine through in the real world, but I am more reserved with facts about my life in the real world. Some of the things about my childhood, etc. are completely unknown to my coworkers and classmates. On here, however, I see myself as kinda boring. I'm actually more of the stand-up comic type, with much more with than I express here. I just don't like to joke around on the internet very much because others can't tell if you're serious or not.

I'm a business owner, so my footprint must be big. At least I hope it is growing...

In all honesty though, I'm not that bad. I had a Facebook account and forgot the password, same thing for MySpace. Not sure if I even cared in the first place.

When I stop to think about my Internet personality, it is the same in person. I give way too much of myself away, if you know where to look. =D

I guess mine would be most accurately classified as "medium", but in the past it was bigger. At one time, I had my own website up and running, was published in the news frequently, and had internet friends that I talked with a lot. There was just a certain turning point in my life and a series of events (stalking) that caused me to have it all pulled. It kinda sucks, because I was starting to get used to people asking me if I was the Leslie that they had seen online. :(

Very good insights. I alwas feared that one day we will abandon intrapersonal relationships for the cold honest internet. People think they are invisible here and yet we can all see them.
