Labeling subjects people to danger

In the United States of America we pass laws to protect all its citizens and keep them safe from corruption and bad things. Well what happens when a law is passed that can actually subject people to more harm than safety. Case in point, There is a state that wants to pass a law that would require convicted sex offenders to have green license plates. It is said to be passed to protect the public from sex offenders, but what about the sex offenders. What crimes make a person a sex offender? More than you would think actually. The laws that prosecute sex offenders are flawed. For instance if you are caught urinating in public you can be prosecuted as a sex offender. Now there are many people convicted as sex offenders that we should be protected from but the license plate law proposal takes things a little to far. It actually poses a greater risk to peoples safety than it protects. If we were to pass this law to “protect” us from danger then where does the line stop? Should people that are convicted of murder be required to drive with red license plates? Should convicted drug dealers be required to have orange license plates and so on? Making people drive around with distinctively different license plates is labeling and creates more risk to people than it protects. Its really no different than the Nazi’s making Jews wear the Star of David, to distinguish Jews from non Jews. I do feel that you should be able to know who are sex offenders but there are better systems that don’t put them at as much risk. I say as much risk because as I said earlier there are flaws in the system. There are websites that you can go to and put in your zip code to find all registered sex offenders in your area. It has been expanded further by showing pictures of the convicted as well as the vague descriptions of charges they were prosecuted with. The system is flawed though because there are many sex offenders who are not registered, and the ones that are don’t really give details on the charges they were prosecuted with. I agree that you should protect the public from real sex offenders but a better system can be created than making them required to have green license plates. Making sex offenders drive around with green license plates would actually subject them to danger. Subjecting people to danger defeats the goal of protecting people. Laws are supposed to be there to protect people, not subject them to danger.

You make a good point. With all the crazy things going on in the world sometimes we forget that there should be someone trying to protect us.
