Does music really have the ability to transform lives?

In a world filled with an abundance of mental illness and depression, it is time to find something other than medicines to bring back the feelings of normalcy and happiness. I know that medicines are a necessity in some cases, but there are other ways to dig yourself out of a black hole. Take it from me: I am a wheelchair bound female who has experienced many bouts of depression, and I'd like to share my story with everyone in hopes that music may be able to transform your life for the better as well. The year was 2001. I was seventeen years old going through what was the "adolescent identity crisis". At the ripe age of 17, I was still struggling with the fact that I was different, and by different, I mean physically disabled. It was a really low point in my life, and it resulted in a deep depression. Feeling alone in the world with hardly any security or confidence in anyone, let alone myself, I turned to music. Luckily, I found the music of Lifehouse. Their profound musical and song writing ability has transformed my life in a way that is unimaginable. Their music has allowed me to find security within myself, and taught me that I am not alone with my feelings. I have seen them in concert six times, and I cannot get enough! I like to refer to them as my "band aid" covering up all of my painful scars. I wish that there were enough words to describe the magnitude of admiration and respect that I have for these guys, but I cannot seem to find the words! So, it is possible for music to turn your life around; you just have to be lucky enough to find them at the right time!

Here are videos of my two "coping" songs while this depression was going on! Feel free to listen!

"Simon" -- This was the primary song that helped me through all of my "crisis". Therefore, it is my all time favorite Lifehouse song!

"Somewhere in Between"- my OTHER coping song! :)

I have a friend with cerebral palsy and bipolar disorder. I think Josh Groban is her equivalent of Lifehouse to you. :-) A relatively unheard of band--The National--is my own musical outlet.

Music really can be such a positive influence. I've read studies where it's used, successfully, in place of drugs for pain management in children. I've used it, combined with guided meditation, among adults with manic disorders and gotten positive results.

The effect it has on people is amazing and should be researched more.
