Language

There has long been a debate about which subject is the most important or valuable. By the title I am sure that you have correctly deduced which subject I find to be the most valuable, language. Words play such an intricate role within daily life; words provide a concise way to convey one's feelings and to communicate with others. How does language compare to mathematics, this being the other most important? Well simply this; without language we would not be able to learn mathematics and even if we utilized math for communication it in itself would be a language. We need language to learn and live. I myself love languages. I study them and learn new ways in which to communicate. Some people may feel that foreign languages benefit them in no way because they will not travel, however, learning a new language can teach you so much about your own. My aspiration is to speak, read, and or write in twenty languages. And you maybe wondering why I am rambling about these things, it is because people forget the weight of a word. It can crush or revitalize someone. Without communication we would be primitive beings that learned nothing and would continue in the perpetuation of ignorance. So choose your words well and learn to properly speak the language on which you grasp so tightly. It should be an aspiration of people to broaden their minds and expand their cultural knowledge.

You express very good insight throughout most the blog and I knew it wasn't really ranting. That final piece of insight however made the rest of your blog completely and utterly an annoyance. You cold have left it with your aspirations but instead you gave silly childish differences for why people need to learn other languages.

Thank you for your compliments and critique. I fully realized that I was coming off like a child, I don't typically look at rants as a mature thing; however, I edited my blog because your point was valid. Thanks again.

The last part of your blog just made me think about immagrants and how they do not always speak clearly with the language they are trying to learn and this made me upset. Even though I agreed with most of what you said I found your ending very cold and upseting. When someone is learning a language they do not always speak it correctly and may say words that seem ignorant or rude but it sounds the same to another word to them in their language.
It annoyed me because I have learned what it is like to carry an accent and know what its like for my cousins who speak three languages in Afrikaans bird is pronounced (foo-kie) which sounds bad and she got in trouble for this.
If you are going to say something about learning languages please try to refrain from making it seem like you are making fun of people from other countries trying to learn. You may have not intended it but it could rub someone the wrong way

I guess my correction wasn't sufficient, I too know the difficulty of learning languages and ustilizing them correctly. If you check out my profile I plan to be a foreign language and linguistics prof. I have studied language and also have embarassed myself trying to speak it. I was referring to those hyper-americans who say everyone should speak english when they themselves speak it poorly. Sorry for the misconception. Please everyone else who intends on commenting please realize that I haven't made any remarks toward those trying to learn english.

I totally, totally, totally agree with you on learning languages and how much they teach you. No language communicates in the same way (math and jargon included) and the more you learn the easier it is to express yourself and learn of new ideas, other cultures, and your own.

However, any kind of language is used as a tool to communicate ideas. Without ideas there would be nothing to communicate and therefore no language. So perhaps the most important subject is ideas.

Deep and true. Thank you for your wise insight. But if I may pose a question, in what language do you suppose these ideas would be contemplated if there were no language in existance?
