I couldn't write yesterday because I was busy and when I finally got on it wasn't working, which sucked. So I'll make two entries today.
There's a story on msnbc.com here about religious liberals. And how they're tired of what's portrayed as "Christian values," being used to back up anti-same-sex marriage and anti-abortion campaigns.
I can understand their frustration. Not all Christians believe the same thing about everything and most of the "Christian Values" the right speaks of are conservative Christian values.
My point? Why are religious values, conservative or liberal, being used to back up political campaigns? I respect people with faith. Hey, it's their right to believe what they want. But it's not okay, under any circumstances, for them to use their belief to shove it in my face. We can have an ethical government without it being backed by a specific religion. It's called just giving everyone equal rights and not telling people how to live. Since when is it the government's job to enforce morality among the people. I don't think that's the government's function.
If any sphere of power is used to establish a kind of morality, it should be a cultural sphere, not a political one. Let everyone's own church or special private school establish their ideas of what's "right" and "wrong". It's not the government's place to decide.
Honestly, I don't understand why people can't seperate their morals from their judgement. I mean, I personally don't like abortion. I wouldn't get one, as far as I know. And I won't REALLY know until I've been put in that situation. But at any rate, I know it's not my place to be telling anyone what to do. So for that reason, I'm very pro-choice under any circumstance.
Good grief. If we're going to establish any "Christian" value under the government how about... oh, I don't know: "Thou shalt not judge". That seems to get looked over quite freqently.

html malfunction take the x out of the anchor tag. Just a freindly helpful tip.
Yeah I wish more conformist (hopefully not all conformist are the same) left the judgement in gods hands instead of their own. And thats coming from a Pagan.
Ah thanks. :P I was wondering why that wasn't working.
I think it would be simple for us to leave judgement in a diety's hands. We really don't have the basis to judge one another. It's funny to see people who want to entwine Christianity into our government with the judicial system it has. I mean, when you think about it, isn't our judicial system itself violating the very law that says "Thou shalt not judge". And yet they use these courts as a vessel to establish religiously fervent anti-abortion stances. It's crazy.
Actually I don't think is neither the government nor the church's role to teach people the distinction between GOOD and BAD. This is whaat families must do, what the first lessons of education must consist of. Then school must make sure that everything the kids know is a-ok. This way, the government and the church won't have to deal with the morality of the people.
True, but many people take a religious approach to raising families. And religion itself is a moral guideline of what to do and what not to do, nine out of ten times, even if you're in a religion with one or many gods, there's usually a code of conduct. Unfortunately, this religiously entrenched code of conduct clouds peoples minds and so their clouded minds are what they use to vote and hold office in. People don't realize that just because they were raised a certain way doesn't mean everyone has the same background, oppurtunities, support, etc. that they had.
I hate when religion gets mixed into politics. It shouldnt be that way.
A little off topic, but my friend was told by a teacher in school that she "couldnt be both democratic and a christian."
that is riciculous!
*note she goes to a private school.
