Kid Shows not what they use to be...

According to a study done by the Parents Television Council, there is "entirely" too much violence in children's television programs. There have been numerous "incidents" that they have cited watching different stations such as: Disney, ABC Family, Cartoon Network, etc. One program they said had an exceptional amount of incidents was Cartoon Network's "Teen Titans". Apparently these programs have violent behavior, adult orientation, and other things not appropriate for the targeted audience.

I do admit that today's kid television has become more "advanced" than when I was younger, but I do not think it has come to the extent that this organization has claimed it to be. Most of the programs that they are citing are programs with super-heros and things of that sort. Of course these things will have some sort of violence, I mean these characters are saving victims from "the bad guys".

As far as the adult orientation goes, you have to think of the parents of these children. These parents have to sit through their child's favorite cartoons on a daily basis, most of which are not entertaining to the parent at all. So the clever writers slip in a few discrete adult jokes, to entertain the bored parent in the mist of the child's entertainment. These jokes or references aren't for the child to notice, and if your child does catch these jokes, it isn't the television programs doing, its the parents. These jokes do not explain or go into detail on these jokes, they are simple references. This means your child recieved knowledge from elsewhere, whether it be from school, home, or friends. You shouldn't throw the blame on television or even video games for that matter. The only purpose of these jokes are for the parent's small amount of entertainment, not the child's.

Personally, I think this whole study was ridulous. If a parent has a problem with these programs, don't let the child watch it. Simple as that. Ever heard of Parental Controls??? They have those now, this being around longer than these so called "inappropriate programs". The entertainment industry has come a long way, because they have to come up with new things for people to watch. The average person isn't entertained by repeatative action. This generation of children also has more knowledge of the outside world, than mine did. I grew up watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers. These programs wouldn't entertain todays children as they were orignally made, thats why they remade them.

I think parents need to chill out and stop putting the blame on everything else but themselves.

That is very true. Although there was violence in the cartoons in the past, it was the manner in which the killing occurred that was different. There are so many shows that stress learning. How much can you take? Kids need time for thier imaginations to grow and to learn on their own. How much tv can a little child learn?

As a parent of a 7 year old daughter it annoys me when good TV shows get axed. Teen Titans was a show about diversity, NOT violence. There were episodes that dealt with racisim, addiction, accepting oneself, and the importance of family and friends. While this show and others like it are being cancelled, they instead are putting up shows that have little to no quality to them in storytelling of characters. Just how many fart jokes you can put into one half house. I do believe Teen Titans should have been rated higher than Y7, due to later seasons dealing with harder topics, I do not feel this show is being looked at fairly. Did the people who voted for this show to be canned actually watch anything BUT the fights? Did they see Troq, when Starfire was called a racist term in her language. A word that meant literally "nothing"? Did they see how much it hurt her and when her friend discovered the "pet name" she was given actually was ripping her apart inside and how they stood together against the racisist character to stick up for their friend? Did they see the episode Overdrive when Cyborg became addicted to a microchip that gave him more energy, and yet was slowly killing him? Should it have been rated Y7? No. Should it have been canned? Deffinetly not.

Before you judge this shows and others like it WATCH THEM. Not just ONE episode, but several. They have some great lessons. Parents are always the very first teachers. But when I allow my daughter to watch TV, I want her to be LEARNING something other then making bodily noises.

The Teen Titans isn't necessarily for little children, but it definetly has lessons to it. I know i find myself chuckling at some of the episodes that I see around 6AM in the morning, and sometimes I think the lessons to be learned in them some adults never learned - i.e. in one episode (Doompatrol series) the leader of the Doompatrol group emphasized the leader's orders over one member's own ideas. Clearly, that's a lesson that people here have never learned - your leader can be wrong, even if you voted for them.

Teen titans is. What they say is bulshit! I agree they should watch it sometime becuase it has meeasges

ahhh good times. teenage mutant ninja turtles and power rangers.

before they went into the crazy space underwater rangers, that is.

Eh. I remember watching violent cartoons when I was a kid myself. I do admit there were too many subtle sex jokes back then, or maybe I just didn't get any of them.

Kids just watch too much TV. If your kid only watches TV for an hour a day, this isn't an issue. If your kid watches TV for 5 hours a day it is...

For those of you who simplly don't understand why people care. Its because even if your kid only watches an hour of TV a day, most of his friends watch 5. So he's being exposed to it whether he's watching it or not.

I'm not big on government cencorship. It is up to the parent.

The whole reason the entertainment industry can get away with what they do is because of the new V-chip.

Which surveys say NOBODY uses.

Here's an idea:
Why don't parents actually PAY ATTENTION to what their children are watching, and TALK to their kids about what messages (good and bad) the shows send? Ask questions, talk about your values and how they relate to what's happening in the show, and if you don't approve of a show don't let your kids watch it. I agree some shows targeted at children aren't very appropriate (or are just plain stupid), but parents need to take more responcibility, stop blaming tv for their problems, and find other parents and community members who will support them in providing a positive environment for their children.

Exactly

I am very with you I love my old shows the ones I grew up on We need our shows back what they are doing is just retarded. If we could get back shows like so weird, in a heartbeat and things it would be wonderful. It might be the shows now a days that are killing little kids making them violent
