.. is what it seems most smokers are saying. Cigarettes are getting more and more expensive and they're bad for you, but what exactly are the positives? Once nicotine gets a hold of someone they can't seem to quit.
-If this is too much reading I just have a question at the bottom-
There are always campaigns and protests that are always trying to convince people to stop smoking or in some cases to never start smoking. People are always bombarded with posters and commercials with pictures like this: http://networkupload.com/adsupported/quickorslow/quickorslow.jpg . Like since middle school in most cases we've been told not to smoke. Teens and even kids get access to them at one point and often get hooked for whatever reason. Like no matter what people say there going to try it at some point. The rising prices and risk of cancer among other things can't seem to turn people away. But what I want to know is what's so great about them seriously?
I've tried a cigarette before. I don't know what smokers call them nowadays. Just one hit or pull or puff of whatever but I was not impressed. I've always been anti-smoking but I decided to try it that time and I did not see what was so great. All I felt from it was a slight minty taste in my throat that I could see irritating me over time.
Cigarettes aren't like other drugs or whatever. With alcohol you more or less can't function as properly as you could which might appeal to some. Marijuana I don't even know just from what I've told just makes things better. I don't know what it does really I've never tried it and don't intend to but it does do something. All other drugs do something to you and that might seem great to whoever. But tobacco in general doesn't do anything except make you want more. I honestly I've never understood the point of wasting what 5 dollars a day or more on a pack of cigarettes when they're bad for and don't do anything positive at all.
What I'm asking more or less is why? For the smokers reading this, why do you do it? For those that don't, why don't you? More or less I want to know what people think. I think a lot and I can't seem to figure out whats so great about them.

the reason you don't understand is because you don't know. If cigarettes did "nothing" then people wouldn't have been smoking tobacco for thousands of years. Clearly billions of people can't all be brainwashed by big tobacco companies.
before the whole tolerance process starts with nicotine, they quite thoroughly have an effect (which you may have noticed if you smoked more of that cigarette) They cause a light-headedness, make you a little dizzy, and makes your body seem a lot heavier. It relieves stress, and otherwise makes you happier. These effects are desirable for a lot of people, which is why they start. Then they get addicted, and can't stop.
personally, I don't like the high you get from cigs, so i don't smoke them. All it takes is a some will power to not fall for the "trap" that big tobacco companies lay down for you. Of course there are factors like peer pressure, stress, etc. and these all contribute to why people smoke.
Btw, marijuana doesn't "make everything better" lol. its effects include euphoria (a common effect of recreational drugs) which is the feel good feeling, among other things.
If you ever want to know why people do a certain drug, go to http://www.erowid.org or http://www.wikipedia.com and look the drug up. there is no drug on this earth that does "nothing" much less tobacco which is used by A LOT of people. It would be kind of silly if people were addicted to smoking a plant that didn't really do anything
EDIT: Sorry spelled erowid wrong
lol, i didn't know how to categorize marijuana. My vocabulary is kinda lol not as good as it used to be.
I know I can't judge something that I've never done, but those effects, except the relieve stress, don't seem all that great. But idk it just doesn't seem like it's worth what people pay for them, with or without an addiction. The just upped the tax the other day i believe. But I can understand why they'd try it and how they could get hooked over time but. A lot of people smoke. It's like about 35% males who smoke in the US and 22% female.
I'm just saying if people have a choice, which they generally do, to do something bad for you why not something else? I'm not promoting anything because honestly people shouldn't do anything bad really but people are gunna do what there gunna do
Yeah, i understand where you are coming from. This is the whole thing about drugs in general. Why do them if you know they are bad for you. Tobacco is a bad example, because it is so addictive, that most people can't use it without it doing some harm to them, because they smoke so much of it. Other drugs that don't create such a strong addiction however, can be used in moderation causing little to no harm in the long run. I say this alot, but if you can drink responsibly, there is no reason you can't smoke/snort/inject responsibly. You just have to know about the chemical you are using, and know the limitations.
People have the choice to live a healthier lifestyle everyday, but we tend to choose not whats more healthy, but what gives more pleasure. A great example, fast food. it is delicious, but horribly bad for us. The same principle can be applied to drugs.
And yeah, i agree, the effects of tobacco aren't that great, which is why i don't smoke them. I have friends who do, though, and some people like the light-headedness/dizziness you get, plus the body high. This is America, the land of the
free, so everyone is allowed to pick their poison. For a lot of people, its tobacco, for others its alcohol. Well, you can pick what poisons the government thinks is right to pick, but thats another issue altogether.
My advice... if you really want to understand why people smoke, bumb a cigarette off of someone, and smoke the whole thing. Experience the 15-20 minute high, and then judge from there. You won't become addicted after one cig, so don''t worry about getting hooked, and then you can decide if the effects are desirable or not.
Well mine won't be as long as all the other comments but i don't smoke because of the look of it. Smoking makes everything smell make you look a bit dumb (personal opinion don't be offended smokers im sure your intelligent looking) but I just don't like the look and smell. I do know that it relieves a lot of stress and is completely addictive. Once you really start you don't have a choice. Why they start im still baffled, i know a couple of kids who did it to look cool.
