Stereotypes

It really bothers me when people automatically label someone because of the things they wear and the way they act. A lot of people assume that because someone wears all black it means they are "goth". I admit that I do label people sometimes but I try not to. I have also heard people assume that because a person is "emo" that they all cut. Which is not true because I have heard that from some "emo" kids. Then people don't like those people because they are "emo", "goth", "prep", or whatever other label they give someone. They never really truly get to know the person for all they know that could be the nicest person they have ever met.
Peopl also label music and if it doesn't fit the labels that they like then they won't listen to it. No matter how good the song is they will claim that they don't like it so that they are apporved of by their friends. That is a bunch of junk because if someone is really your friend they will not care whether you listen to Hannah Montana, or Panic at the Disco. You can't base how good the song is based on the label it is under. Brendon Urie from Panic at the Disco talks about how people label them as "emo." He says, "It's ignorant! The stereotype is guys that are weak and have failing relationships write about how sad they are. If you listen to our songs, not one of them has that tone. Emo is bullshit! If people want to take it for the literal sense of the word, yes we're an emotional band, we put a lot of thought into what we do. People always try to stereotype us, but we don't fit the emo stereotype."
I think that people label because they have nothing better to do and they can't stand it if something is not labeled. I believe that a person is a person no matter what clothes they wear, how many piercings they have, how social or non-social they are. They are just people like me and you.

I hate in movies or on Tv when a two characters clash, one will often tell the other, "I know your type," and then go on to assume they know their whole story. As for emo, I don't believe the term really exists. the people I meet who claim to be "emo" tend to be people who complain about how perfect their life is. I'm trying not to stereotype with that statement, but that is my observations.

You're right, we rely too much on stereotypes. Sometimes that even ruins our own opportunities.
