A very good friend of mine, a young woman I consider my sister, brought up a good point the other day. She had told me that her dad did not believe in global warming. I thought hmm, then the rising temperatures, the strage and harsh weather patterns must just be a figment of our imagination if it does not exist.
No, it does exist, and it is harming every one of us.
Global warming is defined as the increase of the average measured temperature of Earth's near surface air and oceans. The main causes are anthropogenic (man-made) greenhouse gases, or otherwise known as the Greenhouse effect. I'm not sure, but most people seem to know that the fuel we burn not only in our vehicles, but also in our factories, are a huge source of these gases. Not to mention the other chemicals we also release into the atmosphere. Sure, volcanoes may also have some part in the greenhouse effect, but it is a natural cause, how can we blame nature for running it's natural course?
My question is, how can one deny the fact that global warming is occuring right now, when we burn those fuels every day? How can they pass it off as, it does not exist? Is it merely fear that one day, before they die, the o-zone layer will give out and fry us all? Or do they just like being ignorant? I cannot choose to believe in the best of humans any longer, at least, not most of them, so perhaps they just wish to remain ignorant.
It could just be me, but I would rather know what's going on, in case there is anything I can do to prepare. Which, there is nothing we can really do to prepare for something as this. The earth is heating up, the weather, for lack of a better metaphor, has tourettes and our polar ice caps are melting. If that isn't proof that it exists, well then, I don't know what is.
I don't propose that I know everything about global warming, nor do I know a way to stop for good besides finding another way for transportation and keep factories working. I am merely stating that people need to open their eyes to reality. Global warming exists, and it is happening now. To ignore that fact is just stupid. How can one ignore the rising temperatures of summer in a state where temperatures in the summer are quite mild compared to places such as Florida?
Maybe I am just rambling, and maybe I really have no clue what I'm talking about, but the fact stands. I do know that it exists, and I am not aruging that it doesn't. So why do others do so?
