Metal Detector Raids

Tagged:  •    •    •

The talk this week in school has been the metal detector raids that they will be conducting in NYC schools.  They are going to be performing random searches in schools for the next couple of weeks and they are confiscating MP3 players, cell phones and other electronics.  They do give them back at the end of the day but obviously that is going to take a long time.  I understand taking MP3 players and other stuff, but cell phones?  While people do take advantage of cell phones, they can be necessary because it gives parents a means of contacting their kids in cases of emergencies.  Especially after 9-11, you really don’t know when you will need them.  Living in NYC, the mayor should understand such situations.  I am interested in seeing how this is going to go.  Many of the seniors drive, so that’s not a problem, but the amount of cells phones that they confiscate could be insane if they check everyone.  I don’t agree with taking away cells phones and delaying school.  It seems as though they are publicizing it more to deter people from even bringing them.  Monday should be interesting if they do come to my school.

I agree. I men music should be taken but their phones? I mean my mom used to drop me off blocks before (since it was illegal to drop kids off closer), and made me call her the second I got to school. What if someone faints or dies? That is a stupid rule. They should be allowed, but should be turned off.

Apparently is has more to do with people having their things stolen.

I actually had an incident happen today at my school with cellphones. It's ridiculous to take them away if kids aren't using them in class, same goes for mp3 players. If kids want to use them at lunch then I don't see how that's a problem. If they get stolen, that's the kids problem.

Yea, but people always like to put the blame on someone else.

I can see MP3 players, but not cell phones.

Cell phones can be used to detonate explosives, thats what has happened in Kashmir, the phone sends waves, and if the bomb picks it up it can explode, other than that they most likely dont want students to have phones as a distraction.
