You have been a dedicated employee for over 5 years. You have followed all the rules, and regulations of the company. You have showed up on time, worked late hours, filled in for others when they were sick. You have even played "manager” when the real supervisor was out. Now your manager wants to talk to you in their office. Well you didn't do anything bad so it must be a promotion.
You walk into the office with confidence. You know it's either a pay raise, promotion, or recognition. The boss reviews all of the things that you have done for the company. As they take you down reminisce lane, they stop that path with "but".
What could the “but’ be? You have never done anything wrong at the company? So you wait to hear the agonizing detail behind this "but”. They only continue to say "I 'm going to have to let you go."
The first thing that comes to mind is why? Well here comes the bogus excuse. When you finally get down to all the bull crap, basically you got fired or let go. But they felt if they tried to break it down to you easily, then you wouldn't be too upset. Yeah Right!
The way the economy is now, people are losing their jobs from left to right. It does not matter if you are temp, part time, full time, a longtime dedicated employee, management and more.
So while you are investing in your 401(k), and the company's stocks, beware because you may need to use that money sooner than you thought. But many 401(k)s will not let you take out money against it because they want you to retain a certain number of years, or wait until you retire.
Yeah you have a certain amount in your savings but now that savings is becoming dry. Either you had to use this money for rent, mortgage, gas and I could go on and on.
So your boss says you are a great asset to the company. Whoop ti do! The same time they say that, the next day you can be out the door. But you helped make the company what they are today. Well your job just said ......so what!
You are friendly with the boss so even if they are laying off, you won't be on that list. They will laugh in your face and get the "serious” when they get ready to fire you or lay you off.
So you are in management or higher. That's great, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty , they will tell you to fire or lay off certain people, then layoff or fire you also.
Maybe you can go get unemployment. Like that's easy. They have said on the news that the unemployment percentage has went up 10% instead of going down. So go ahead and join the long line. You might get it, and you might not
So more than likely we want to blame the company we worked for. Yes it is their fault, but if you are getting fired or layed off now, it's because of the economy. The taxes are higher which means things your company has to buy is higher. Then fraud and robbery crimes are steadily going up. This hurts your company. There are many other factors that hurt your company. They don't want to let you go, but the economy is telling them too. Well sometimes.

I have been there. It is a big punch in the gut to have devoted so much time and energy to a job just to find out that everything you worked so hard for is gone in the blink of an eye. The economy sure does suck....
You aren't lying. It 's sad to see people get layed off and then next thing you know, you become one of them. Thanks for your comment.
I couldn't imagine being laid off. I've never been put into that situation, and I hope that i never will.

I hope I never will too. But my mother was laid off a couple of times. I wrote this from hearing about the experience. I wouldn't wish this to happen to anyone.
Did you get laid off? I wasn't sure if you were speaking from experience or not...

Like I told LeslieQ I have only heard about this and listened to people that have been through this experience. I just want others to know that having a job is no guarantee no matter how much you know the boss or have been there for a certain number of years.
One of my good friends quit her job recently with nothing lined up. We all advised against it, but she was just sure she'd get a job quickly. Well, two months later, her savings are running out and she's only had two interviews! I hate to say I told you so, but...

Well if I could , I would say, TOLD YOU SO!That is what I am talking about. Some people are sadly becoming ignorant when it comes to the job market .They think if they quit their job, they will get another one by next week. They think if you get layed off, the company will eventually take you back. They think if you get fired, you'll be able to bounce back. People that think this need to realize that the economy has changed for the worse. Not better. Thanks on your insight.
I haven't forgot about you :) I have been gone for awhile. Nice to see your blog. Yeah this does suck. I haven't lost my job but my hours have been cut badly. Next week I only get one day for 7.5 hours and that is all I get. My school payment is high, and I can barely afford anything and I live at home with my dad.
I think it is only going to get worse before it gets better sadly...
