WHO’S TO BLAME FOR THE FAT KIDS?

Tagged:

Every time I turn on the news or log on onto the internet, I hear another lawsuit against some sort of snack food, or fast food restaurant. Snack foods, like Oreo, change their recipes to appease lawyers. I don’t get it. When I was a child, my parents regulated how much fatty foods I partook upon. I could not sit in the house all day stuffing my fast with sugar, fat, and salt loaded foods. Every day I had three square meals a day with vegetables and a snack, usually something homemade. I was an active child, and my parents encouraged me to go outside, even though I had Nintendo, Sega, and Super Nintendo. Computer games were for times when I couldn’t go out, (ie: Rain, night time, too cold or too hot). I rarely ate at nor wanted to eat at fast food restaurants like McDonald’s. I understand that today’s parents are too busy to always cook well-balanced meals, but it is not the fast food chains’ responsibility to provide children with the nutrition that they need. This society needs to realize that, they cannot allow their children to eat foods with no nutritional value and sit in the house and play video games all day. It’s not about being “fat.” It’s about their heath and well-being. Allowing children to remain inactive all day and living on a diet that no doctor would recommend, and than file frivolous lawsuits, are appalling. The children need to come first and their health needs to be top priority. Parents need to encourage their children to go outside and run around. Give them some fruit instead of junk food. With all the health risk associated with foods high in fat, salt, oil, and cholesterol, parents should have more responsibility about what they feed their kids. I’m not condemning parents they take their kids out to the fast food restaurants that they love, but it is wrong to permit them to live on it while not providing them with the nutrition kids need to grow healthy. Going to McDonald’s or Burger King is fine a couple days a week, but every day is outrageous for anyone to remain healthy. So can parents blame the companies and restaurants for their children becoming obese? Can they really point their finger at them and honestly say, “you are the reason my child is obese with health problems?” Who’s to really blame for America’s children’s weight and weight related problems?

Fast food is just that, Fast food. I hate hearing people blame fast food for the kid's weight or problems. They aren't being good parents if they are letting them eat food like that all the time.

I agree, and you already know that fast food is not healthy for you, so why eat it? Nobody is forcing you to consume that food.

A lot of times, it is society's own fault. We've gotten rid of the playplaces at McDonalds, made it easier and easier to drive everywhere, and cut out funding for physical education. No wonder America is filled with fatties. It is true that not everyone is fat, but there is a general consensus that America needs more exercise. And it isn't just the parents' faults. Its everyones. Adults and everyone in general need to set good examples. We can't just blame McDonalds for making us fat. As an athlete, I can go to a burger joint and run it off. America has a problem, because we don't bother to go running anymore. And besides that, just people refuse to walk. Why walk when you can drive little electric scooters? Get off your tubby butt of lard and go walking! Jog. We don't have to hop into our hummers to get to a friend's house 5 minutes away. Just do something. Stop sitting on your butt and stuffing your face.

I love walking places, especially in the fall and spring, when it's pretty out. I miss living on the East Side, where I had a KMart, a Quick Trip, a Gordman's, a library, a craft store, and a thrift store within walking distance (2-3 miles). I never had to rely on a vehicle to get anywhere, and if I wanted to go to the mall, I'd just get on a bus, then walk some more. Now I live on a farm, and I have to coordinate schedules with everyone else, making sure someone can take me to the bus stop so I can get to class, or to work, or wherever else I need to be. It's nice and quiet, with no more annoying neighbors arguing on the front lawn, but I can't get anywhere!

We all know it is not good to have fast food or junk food on a regular basis. Why some parents let there kids eat fast food more than a once a week is outrageous. You can cook the same meal at home and it would be better for you. When I was young I was not allowed to be inside all day (not that I wanted to be anyway) but now it is common for children to stay inside and play video games and watch tv all day. All through school I had gym everyday, now some kids only have gym once a week if that. It is no wonder that kids are fat these days.

If you are wise you'll listen to me

What do you get when you guzzle down sweets?
Eating as much as an elephant eats
What are you at getting terribly fat
What do you think will come of that?

and so on yada yada yada

the only people to blame for a child getting fat, is the parents of that child, plane and simple. If our parents had conceded to our requests for a happy meal every single time we passed McDonalds, or a Whopper every time we passed a BK, then we too would be morbibly obese, but they didn't and so we arent...

It is the parents fault and a persons own fault for their weight. People just want someone to blame for their own mistakes.

They are not too blame. There are some "healthier" options at these places and it's not their fault you choose to eat there all the time!

It is, first and foremost the parents responsibilty to limit the amount of fat, sugar, etc. consumed by the children. I do feel however, that the fast food chains should also have healthy choices. We are living in a nation of accessibility and ease. We want what's the easiest and most convenient, i.e. fast food. If the fast food companies are generating billions of dollars in profit, they can definitely afford to make healthier choices on their menu.

Parnets who say that BK made their kid fat by age 2 should be put through a madatory CAT-scan so that we have proof to show how crazy they are. I don't know why the legal system puts up with cases like these. A fastfood place shouldn't be sued because you decided to drop a few thousand of your kids college fund at thier restraunt. I am sick and tired of kids becoming overwieght and unhealthy with no will to change it whatsoever.

I think its the parents' fault for their children being overweight because not only because some of them sometimes don't cook meals at home, but because they never taught their children about how to eat well.

I agree that it's the parents fault. The parents should take more interest in their children's diet and daily activity.

It is impossible to blame restaurants for causing children to gain weight anymore than television corrupts America. However, I do think restaurants ethically have a duty to provide healthy choices. More fast food chains have responded to customer demand for this.
