Cultural stereotypes

Tagged:  •

As America, we are known as the most diverse nation in the world, welcoming different people from different backgrounds to our country. But..............one of the worst problems we have are stereotyping different cultures because of the media, hearsay, and what we see from day to day . Cultural stereotypes just don't hurt others but it hurts our nation to taking the next step to accepting each other without being prejudice. What are some stereotypes you have about different cultures, races, and ethnic backgrouds, and what do you think can be done to get over that stereotype and help others get over that stereotype?

If as young people we get over being prejudice, we can begin to grow and help other grow, we can also pass down our ideals to our children and so on, we should all take the next step to thinking, accepting, and being culturally diverse. Do you have any friends that are predjudice about other cultures or even family member?, what can you say to change the way they feel?

Next, we can expose ourselves to different friends and places with different types of people. Be social. Get to know someone before turning the other cheek. Help another before tearing one down. These are principles we forget about when it comes to cultural diverse.

I 100% agree. Thanks for posting this.

It might be a little difficult to change the way someone feels, but if you can say something that just gets them thinking, that in itself is a great feat! Often people embrace teh stereotypes simply because they haven't thought through the reality.

People often embrace stereotypes not only because of the images being reinforced through the media, but also through what their families believe in. Racism literally being passed down from generation to generation. Why can't kindness be passed down instead?

Getting to know people and being open to others is really the only way to overcome such a situation. It upsets me how much people stereotype each other. Many of my friends are culturally diverse and I find it hard that my family is often not as accepting of them as they should be. (you might want to check out my blog about one particular such instance: http://www.progressiveu.org/110812-i-thought-youd-understand)

I am constantly surprised as to how many of my peers have prejudices. More people than you'd think hold stereotypes, and I don't see that changing any time in the furture.
