Are people giving up on getting teenagers interested?

I am endlessly concerned with the fact that most people my age do not know, and do not care, about anything in current events other that Britney’s latest breakdown. However, what concerns me even more is that a lot of people have just given up trying to educate teens in politics.

This blog is inspired, by and event that happened to me a few months ago. I am editor-in-chief of my high school newspaper, and while ago we were working on an issue, when someone made the suggestion that instead of writing an article on the political primaries, that we should make a crossword about them, to make it more interactive and fun. It seemed like a good idea to everyone, so I volunteered to make it. However, coming up with about thirty questions about the primaries meant that some of the questions were a little trickier than others. Yet, the majority of clues were like, “_______ Romney”, Hillary Clinton was Bill Clinton’s ______ _______, John McCain is a member of the ________ party.

The next meeting when we editing articles, the majority of the club decided that the crossword was too difficult and that nobody would actually do it. Instead they wanted to have a crossword about pop culture, TV show, celebrities and fashion trends.

I could have probably been stubborn, used authority to keep the crossword, but I didn’t want to create conflict so early in the year, and I understood their point. It would be very difficult to finish the whole puzzle, and odds are no one was going to look anything up. But as a newspaper isn’t our job to provide new information? Was is right of us to assume that not a single student would have gained something from it, or should we at least have given them a chance to learn something new about something extremely important?

To be honest, I'm not sure I agree that teens are uninterested. I read a voting guide in Seventeen, have been in many political discussions in high school and college, and know a lot of teens who feel very strongly about it. I hear kids and voting age teens who they support. And I agree, I think having the crossword would have been a great idea.

Like what you've read? Well, then here's more:

Glad you are not mad. I think I will try that. It was so sad. You keep up on what you want to do! Let us all know how it turns out, please!

Hey, I think that would be a great idea. I regret not having something like that to lean on. I am 40 plus and I do not know everything I should know about politics, in fact you could probabbly teach me a thing or two. I think that is a great idea. If they had there way then, you should be able to have your way now. Do it, they will thank you later in life!

GOD bless you

And , good luck!

I just accidently stumbled upon this website. I read the very passionetly written letter about the boy and his nephew. Wow, that broke my heart. I am so sorry for you. You and all of you have to know that God is in control of everything. If you walk with him and accept Jesus, he will make all things for the good. I promise, I am a living witness to this. I am 40 plus, I am telling the truth when I speak. I live for Jesus and he rules my world.

We have always been able to do things that are Biblicy wrong, bad just not right. Drugs, sex and the list goes on. Maybe if we all just gave it all to the Lord our lives would not be so crazy. To me, it is worth it. A world of happiness. I just know that knowing Jesus just puts things in perspective for me. With him I am happy and content. He is my ammo and I am his servant. With him I am in the light, with out him I stumble through the darkness. God is the way the truth and the light.

God bless you,

Karen

Political crossword sounds like a great idea. I know how you feel though. You should have been stubborn about it. I'm just a staff writer for my high school newspaper, but next year I'll be the editor of some section or another. I think that the people who come up with such great ideas need to be the ones to push it the most, even if it's only for a high school newspaper. Going that far is a huge step and it's annoying/pitiful how stupid some people are in schools. And some of them are too ignorant to really care which is the saddest thing ever.

I could not find the other guys blog. I do not know if you read it, it was really sad. I was trying to reply to him. Your blog, it is extremely important. Please do not get me wrong at all. I am so sorry. How do I find the sad one? It is El mIrage, my heart is just broken for him and his family.

You, keep rockin... Most of all DO NOT GIVE UP!

God bless you,

Karen
