School's blocking online servers

Recently I went to search when a friend's musical was starting. He had posted the information in a blog on a popular public server: myspace.com. I was disgruntled when, after entering in all of the proper information into the URL box, an unfamiliar "restricted access"screen popped up when I tried to log into the familiar website I was trying to purouse . After reading the message on the site that I was now browsing, I was informed that my school has decided to ban nearly all blogging sites/ chatrooms from the school server.

Myspace.com is not the only webpage that has been blocked from my school's local server. The ever growing, Facebook.com, has also been banned. The restriction of two server's are the most horrifying to me, because they were the closest to home. I frequently use both of these networks to stay in touch with various friends whom I do not see on a daily basis. The access to these sites at school was the foundation of communication I had with these friends daily. I am not one of those students who goes to school computers at various times throughout the school day to go onto blogs instead of doing school work. The prime time in which I am trying to use these networks while at my school is after the school day is done. I am a very active individual at my school, so when I do have downtime, I tend to like to use it to keep in contact with my friends. Now that these server's are blocked from my school's server, it has become progressively more difficult to keep daily contact with these friends.

The basis of this blog is to start the ball rolling for a discussion on administrative control at high schools. Why are these type of networks becoming blocked? Why is the administration taking such extreme actions, instead of trying to inform the students of appropriate and inappropriate internet use?

Well I hope my school blocks myspace. Nothing against you, but my school has a problem with this. People want to use the computer to do their homework, and 70% of the computers were being used by people who looked at their friends pics. at myspace.

I agree with you. Even if it may seem inconvenient to have your favorite sites blocked, the message is clear--do all your extra socializing on the internet at home, not at school. I don't like it when people at school are reading people's xangas, blogs, or commenting on myspace pages. It wastes time and it isn't educational! They should free up the computer for those who need to edit their essays last minute or print out work, not wasting time.

I agree. Besides, the school is not reqired to have the internet. Limited internet is better than no internet. They provided it, they can establish limits as they please.

yeah, when i was in high school we had a lot of problems with people going to the library to play games or whatever and they had to block a lot of sites. but that's what you have to do in an EDUCATIONAL setting. it's just some things that shouldn't be allowed while you're trying to learn.

my school i think has gone block happy! they have blocked just about everything! from myspace to yahoo music player to half of the chemistry websites we use for our homework! its pretty crazy. i can understand blocking things such as myspace, because half of the students should be doing their homework not myspace junk. but my best friend and i freaked when we found out every music player we could think of was blocked...see we go eat lunch in the AG office and listen to music its just the 2 of us and the teacher so its not problem BUT we can't listen to anything now! its sad!

" i can understand blocking things such as myspace, because half of the students should be doing their homework not myspace junk. "

What makes music player junk more important and educational than Myspace?
