My Indiana Education..... SUCKED!

Tagged:  •

So I'm beginning to wonder if I am a boring person.....  Why?  It seems that my grade school and high school career has little prepared me for the depth of thought that I find comes so naturally to other people.  Perhaps it is unfair to blame my superficial brain on my education, but you have to consider that going to school is supposed to be brain exercise, and that especially in high school, teachers are supposed to be aiming towards preparing you for college and the "real world."  Now, perhaps it is also important for me to mention, to anyone who may question my capacity for deep thought, that I am a straight A student, that I graduated third in my class, and that I took honors Literature in high school and got an A+.  So-- either my capacity for thought is limited to literature or my education sucked.  And I'm voting for the sucky ed.

So-- Since I attended a "4 star high school" with all sorts of awards from the government each year for being an "All-American High School" and for staying in the top 10 in Indiana with regards to standardized test scores....  Does this mean that the greater part of people in this state are having the same experience??  Are we Hoosiers being left behind the rest of the country?  Or is this problem wide-spread across the United States, and the good thinkers that I'm comparing myself to are actually from other countries?  Anybody?

Either you didn't get the required preparation, or you didn't know how to learn it. But as long as you are able to examine yourself as you did, and write it in this blog, I don't think that you actually lack that depth of thought you talked about; maybe you are not so conscient of it yet.

I am from Indianapolis also.... went through Elem. Middle and High schools there, now I'm in Tenn. going to college. I was feeling that same way. I believe that what you have in your mind is something totally different than what comes out of your mouth. Ask youself if it's your thoughts that are lacking (which doesn't seem to be from the post) or is it you ability to pull them out of your head and put them into words.... Being from the Indiana Education System myself I would have to say that the teachers did very little if not nothing at all to enhance our right to public speech. Overall I believe it is a Social-language that is lacking.

But when it all comes down to it... it's what's on paper that's going to get you thru college. Not the "intelligent discussions" you have with fellow class mates.

I totally agree with you.... I hadn't thought of it that way, but it makes sense, that while they're teaching us all the right stuff and we're doing great on our tests, they haven't really shown us how to put that knowledge to use in conversation. Heck, half of my teachers in high school were themselves incapable of intelligent conversation.... how can we expect them to help us?

Well, if Indiana isn't cutting edge or mentally stimulating enough, Try another place like one of the Coasts or another country. Educational experience can vary greatly from one environment to another, and depending on how open you are to education and knowledge.
