Meningococcal Meningitis

Alright. So some scary stuff has been going around at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. There were recently two cases of meningococcal meningitis reported on campus.
Before coming to college, all students were encouraged to get a meningitis vaccine. I am a bit lazy, though, and I never got around to doing that. I know, its a quick procedure, and I love needles, but it would have meant a ten minute drive to the township building. Anyway, last week, my friends decided to start mocking me a little because I never got it taken care of. Another friend who didn't get the vaccine and I decided to hold our ground against the shot.
Well, it turns out that I have heard that the strand that was responsible for the "outbreak" is one that is not protected against by the vaccine. This is horribly scary. The campus thought they were safe, with the exception of those of us who were never vaccinated, but it turns out that now we may see more cases than we thought possible.
Just wanted to let you know.
The school health center reported the following:

Please take precautions to protect yourself from this deadly disease.
· Do not share cups or drinking glasses with others.
· Do not share eating utensils with others.
· Do not share toothbrushes, cigarettes, lipstick or anything that
has been near someone else's mouth.
· The disease also is spread by kissing.

If you experience the symptoms of meningitis:
· high fever
· headache
· stiff neck
Go to the doctor IMMEDIATELY

Stay Safe!
