the N word: should African Americans use it?

Tagged:  •

This topic is always a hot topic among people. It could take a like, a billion years to argue. Right now, since I don't have anyone to argue with, I'm gonna give my opinion on it. Ok. Ready?
I'm sure we all know that part of the diaspora of Africans was through the dispersal of them due to Europeans. Um...if you don't know that, then I think you should do a little reading because its kinda important.
Anyway, so we also know that Europeans didn't like Africans so much, and made them slaves. And of course, If you don't like someone you're gonna make fun of them right? Well, that was how the term "nigger" came along.
Over the years, African Americans fought so their children would not have to hear that word used against them. No race should use this word, but what shocks me the most is that after all that work, I hear it the most from African Americans.
Today, that same word is used among African Americans. It is used socially, substituting "friend". Although people argue that is it a harmless word, I think its interesting how people use that particular word. They couldv'e chosen any word they wanted, but they chose that word. Interesting. Anyway, I think its wrong to use (obviously) because this word was used for degration, and the fact that people continue to use the it after so many have died over that word makes me sick.
Although there are many factors that could cause the use of the "N" word, I still believe that many African Americans are using it out of lack of knowledge/awareness or just because they simply don' t care.

I personally feel that there are no such things as "harmless words", especially words like the N word. I don't think people realize that the words they say affect everyone around them and it's sad, the carelessness that surrounds us. You're right, people like Martin Luther King Jr. gave their lives for future generations and people are just throwing it away.

I agree...not only did Martin Luther King give his life but many predecessors gave their lives. I refuse to answer or have a friendship with people who believe the connotation of the word nigger has miraculously changed into a term of endearment!

I'm not trying to defend slavery here or anything...

but Slavery didn't happen because "Europeans didn't like Africans so much, and made them slaves."

Africans were accessible at the time. It was "easy" in a sense to buy them... economically sound.

Otherwise, who knows? Maybe we would have enslaved the French. Or Mexicans. You never know.

Ok. First of all, I did not say that as a fact, I said that just as a summary. (Even though it is a fact) We all know, or should know, that anyone who uses a SPECIFIC race for enslavement means they generally don't care too much for that race.
Second of all, who is we?
Third of all, Europeans not only enslaved Africans, but also Mexicans, Asians, and Native Americans. Oh, and I thought French people were Europeans....

I believe that no one should be abe to use it. If African-Americans use it in regards to saying friend or buddy younger white children may think they can do the same thing. That child is not going to understand what they did wrong and they are going to wonder why someone in there class beat them up.
