As most of you are by now aware, ProgressiveU is about far more than blogging. While getting those progressive thoughts out there is a vital part of progress, acting on those thoughts is equally as important. With that in mind, we would like to invite you to take part in our newest endeavor.
ProgressiveU will, until further notice, run a national phoneraiser.
So what's that?
From now until we say otherwise, we will be collecting used cell phones, inkjet cartridges, digital cameras, MP3 players and handheld game consoles. This collection has a two fold purpose. First, each item collected will raise funds towards the operation and maintenance of ProgressiveU and the scholarship competition. But even more importantly than that, every item collected will either be disposed of according to current EPA regulations or will be refurbished and resold to those who can't swing the full price.
What's more progressive than getting rid of the things you no longer use while keeping them out of the landfill? You may not realize it, but if improperly disposed of, the cell phone can pollute up to 132,000 liters of drinking water! And the average American household has 3 unused cellphones just sitting around. That's a lot of drinking water... and a lot of junk!
To take part in this exciting new program, mail your used items to:
ProgressiveU.org

And remember, even if they no longer work, we'll still take them and make sure that they're disposed of properly!
For more information on this program, or ways you can help, you can email the ProgressiveU staff at info@progressiveu.org

This is a great idea. I'm sure I have something to fit each category! The only issue would be shipping cost, but that really shouldn't be too much of a nuisance.

Mind Control is Easier Than You Think
It's really not too bad. I send everything flat rate when I can make it fit which charges the same price for any weight anywhere in the US (I think it's 9 dollars and some change now that they upped postage again). I just have to gather up all the cell phones we have lying around and get my butt to the post office. Which I will do, TODAY! I have a present to mail.

Wow, I had no clue one phone could pollute so much. Is that figure based on a regular, modern-day, bag-free phone, or is it based on the backpack monster my parents and grandparents carried until the phone company refused to provide service to it?

I asked and they do not currently accept laptops.
You can donate it to a computer recycling center (http://www.crc.org). Not sure if Computers with a Cause takes pos laptops or not but you might check :) Planet Aid is doing a laptop donation drive too. http://www.planetaid.org/TextPage.asp?SubMenuItemID=174&MenuItemID=53
Or, you can always sell it

I will look into the donation sites.
money is nice, but I think something very bad would happen to me if I tried to make someone pay money for my POS compaq. :-P

I don't like compaqs. I've been pretty loyal to Gateway the past few years (there was a nice one on sale when I graduated from high school, so my mom got us both one, and then it broke, and my service plan allowed me to get another computer, and the Gateway they had seemed pretty good, so I got it. I like it so far, and I'm slowly getting used to Vista). I hear HP is pretty good too, and I've heard mixed opinions about Dells.

I had a message about my hatred for my compaq, my love of my current, 4-year-old Gateway Desktop, and my plans to purchase a HP Model dv6830us in the near future, but I went to submit it and received "the page cannot be found" messages for the next half hour and then I gave up and went to bed. Oh well.
But I was just agreeing with your dislike of Compaqs. ;-)

I usually donate all of my old cell phones to the local battered women's shelters, but if I come across any others laying around the house, I'll try to send it on out.
Woo hoo... finally got some phones today. As soon as I get enough to make a decent package... I'll ship them out! Thanks for participating.
