Turning away from Christianity

First let me give you a background on where this blog is coming from. I blog for the newspaper in Nashville,Tn. We are in the bible belt and i am very liberal. Most of my blog i also put on this site also. I get published once a week. I talk on very liberal issues.

Do you want to know why I am turning away from Christianity? Christians! I have received many e-mails stating that I am going to have “eternal consequences” and that I am not a Christian. I thought being a Christian is accepting that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. After these past weeks, it seems that I am wrong. Basically, people are telling me I am going to hell because of my personal opinions on issue like same-sex marriage and abortion. Every time I receive an e-mail, I am stepping farther and farther away from Christianity. These people need to learn that you cannot convert me by telling me I am going to go to hell. If you want to try and convert someone, you need to respect the person you are talking to. I just thought I would let these people know, that you are doing a great job turning people away from religion.

I am new to this website and have not read any of your other blogs, but from what i have read, I agree with you. I am not an atheist, however I feel like other Christians are pushing me farther away from religion. I am also very liberal and people do not like my views with same sex marriage and abortion. I feel like so many Christians are hypocrites!

Correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation are your friends on this site. Don't expect a good response if you continue to type as you did above.

You are competing for a scholarship. Do you think you would win ANY OTHER scholarship contest (that involves writing) if you wrote the way you do? I can almost guarantee the answer would be a resounding no.

Additionally, this may be a free country, but we are a private organization, and thus can make whatever rules we want. We can censor you, if that is our desire. We tend not to, because we believe in freedom of speech, but we have removed comments for various violations of our terms of use.

Please use correct spelling and grammar. Your opinions will be taken much more seriously if you do.

Wholeheartedly.
No matter what you're going to get messages like that. While being Christian, you can form your own opinions that may go against somewhat what the Bible says.

For me, I'm "christian": meaning I believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins.
However, I'm for same-sex marriages & against abortion.
Hate-mail will keep coming.

Which is why I'm pretty frustrated with the close-mindness

I believe alot of religions' are flawed. They believe they are right about everything. Really no one knows what we do in life is right or wrong, or where we will go when we die. That's my own belief. Believe what you want..don't follow a certain religion. I don't because I do not fit into one.

Don't listen to these people e-mailing you. Hope this helps!

First, my disclaimer: I am a Christian, and the morality espoused in the Bible has come to greatly shape my world view. I do not normally overtly write about my religion in comments on other people's blogs, but since this blog is obviously religious in nature, I won't hold anything back here. There is a verse in the Bible which says it is better to pray alone in a closet than to preach on a street corner, which is why I am usually quiet on matters of Christianity (Matthew 6.5: "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you").

Also, I am no theologian. I'll try not to sound pedantic, but that's difficult to do. Take my comments as you will.

Even though you are discouraged by the zeal of other, more conservative Christians, they should not affect your views about your religion. That is a matter between yourself and God. When others seem to try to scare you about the Devil and hell, don't take it out on them. They believe the greatest service one can do for others is to bring them to God, and for that, I for one cannot fault them. I personally think that the devil and hell exist, but at more the personal level: the "devil" would be that part of your mind which is full of doubt or fear, and convinces you to abandon your faith. As for the afterlife, there is only one condition: that you accept Jesus as your personal savior in order to go to Heaven- read John 3:16. That is the central tenet of Christianity, not fringe issues like abortion or gay marriage.

If you surf around this site a little bit, you might discover that I do not support abortion or gay marriage, because I think they are morally wrong, but how can I know? I do read the Bible occasionally, but never go to church on Sundays. My faith comes from a personal relationship with God, and it is Him that you should seek in order to resolve those apparent conundrums involving your religion and your personal opinions.

I don't know if this does anything for you. I just saw your blog and thought I should say something. Once again, take it as you will, though I can't encourage you enough to explore God for yourself, and not let others dictate your relationship with him.

...but my orignal separation from the christian communion was based in the irreconcilable ethical quandaries that I found while studying the bible. Basically, I was unable to reconcile the murderous brutality attibuted through that text to the christian "god," and the concept of "good" that had been instilled in me by my parents and family. The most striking example of this conflict is epitomized in the story of the Exodus (specifically Exodus 11:1-10, 12:29-30). I find it inconceivable to worship a being (real or imagined) that would condone the murder of innocent children as a means to compel the compliance of those children's parents. This is a topic on which I have previously blogged about in some depth, but the short version is that even if I DID still believe in the existence of supernatural forces and beings (which I do not), I certainly would not captiulate to the worship of a being who in modern terms could be described as a terrorist.
