I'll take weight issues for 300.

Ever since I was little, I've been a little.. chunky. It's still a problem I have today, and I don't know how to get rid of it. It scares me, because I don't want it to get so bad that I'll develop some sort of disease. I want to lose weight so badly, but I never do anything to help myself. It seems as if I'm so lazy, that I don't care. When I picture myself in my head? I don't see what I see when I look in the mirror. I imagine myself as thin, giving me a boost of confidence and self-esteem. I don't know how to even start this weight loss journey. I guess what got me thinking was my prom dress.

I ordered that today, 424 dollars. I want to be able to go in for alterations and them have to take it in. I want to be smaller, so I can look better in that dress. I need to tone my arms, and my stomach. I hate being self-conscious everyday of my life because of my weight. It stops today. I just hope I stick with it. I think I'm going to exercise everyday, and eat only 1300 calories a day. I need to do this for myself, and plus, with summer coming up, I want to show all the guys who didn't want me because of my weight what they're missing. I'm sick of feeling like a balloon. My mom has seen me struggle and fail with this problem for 2 years now. It's time for some changes. :)

Lovely dress, great blog entry title, but horrible self esteem.

Personally, I cannot see a person as "fat" unless they are a mean person. My friends cannot be fat. Good, nice people cannot be fat. Mean, spiteful people are fat. I'm sure you'll look fine in your dress. Just don't do anything that will hurt your health because of a stupid prom. It's really not all it's cracked up to be (in my opinion of course. *sigh* wish i didn't have to say that automatically).

Work on that self-esteem, missy! :)

Well, if I may ask, how much do you weigh? I am 200 and have been for a long time. Can't gain or loose any weight. I wish I were about 175, even merely 25 pounds and I would look so different. And yet I still think that I can be beautiful, the only people that count are my friends and family and they will tell me if something looks horrible on me.

I guess in some ways it's not a matter of how much you weigh, but how you look at yourself and what you wear. Larger people have to watch what they wear.

My advice if you want to loose the weight is to follow the food pyramid closely and stay healthy.

    SamanthaSUE ily's picture

Now that I think of it, I don't even know how much I weigh. I know it's like, 290? A lot more than I want it to be. I would die to be 200 pounds. I'm about.. 5'11? So it's kind of evened out. I really want to get healthier. I know I can't become anorexic because I just CAN'T stop eating, or put myself through that. I just needed motivation for exercise. :P

Goodness gracious, I understand weight issues. I've always been heavy. Funny thing is, I'm already doing everything that every doctor has told me to do to drop soume weight. I'm eating better than the rest of my family usually does, and I exercise nearly every day for two hours.

Still heavy. It's genetic, sadly. I didn't know this until recently, because the chunky gene skipped everyone else in my immediate family. Stupid heredity.

So seriously, don't stress over it. Exercising a little more and eating better will probably help a little. But don't fret over trying to be skinny. It's just as overrated as prom is. ^_^ Trust me, the most beautiful people are those who are comfortable in their own skin, chunky or not. So if you're not stressing over your weight and just enjoy yourself, you'll shine.

What exactly constitutes "chunky"? That's a beautiful dress and I think no matter what your weight is you will love wonderful in it with some confidence.

You should consult a doctor before you start an exercise/diet regimine. Has your physician recommended that you lose weight? 1300 calories a day is not a lot, especially if you're exercising every day. The average person needs about 2000 calories a day. If you're exercising every day you probably shouldn't cut your caloric intake so drastically until you see a professional.

    SamanthaSUE ily's picture

    Thank you for the comment on my dress :) I've been considering boosting the calories up to 1500 just to be on safe side, too. I wouldn't want to do anything that's going to hurt me, yanoe? Thanks for being concerned, though. &♥;

I'm glad that you are taking the initiative to lose weight and become healthy, but just make sure you are doing it the right way. If you are involved in a workout program, you should be eating at least 1500 calories a day to keep your metabolism up. The whole point is to get healthy and boost your metabolism, not lower your food intake. Just switch your unhealthy foods to some of the more healthy ones, especially fruits and vegetables. And be sure to get some protein in somewhere! All of this should help, and of course, exercising will work miracles as well. Best of luck!

I love the dress. I agree with alot of people who commented. Your self-esteem is low. Mine has been most my life also. I was made fun of since I was in preschool until 7th grade. I decided to stop eating. Lost almost 50lbs. I still felt fat but my body just couldn't do it anymore.

I am very short (5'1) and I was 120 lbs. Now most people would think well that is a fine weight, but one must understand the way my body looks. I have small hands, wear a size 4 1/2 in kids shoes but have huge hips, bust and rib cage. My body is not made to be 120lbs.

I have started to tone up by working. I lift about 50 to 100lbs. But If I were you I would first gain some confidance. You should want to look good because YOU want to not to please everyone else. I did it to please everyone else. My aunt tormented me saying "one day you will be pretty and lose all that weight." The boys won't matter years from now. If someone likes you they will like you for how you are now.

I have finally excepted that I will not look perfect like these models, or other people. But I can look perfect for my body. It is the same for everyone. They want to look thin like everyone else when their body may not even be made to look like that.

Be happy with who you are. If you want to tone, tone up. If you want to lose weight, lose weight. But do it for YOU not anyone else. It takes alot of hard work to come close to the way you want your body to look. I am still not there but have excepted my body for what it is now. I hate the word fat too, like bridge said.

Put on that dress and feel confidant. The more you feel "fat" the more you will percieve yourself that way. If you have the confidance than you can change how your mind is working! :)

Like Mvenus929 stated and I stated work on your confidance. Once you get that set then try to cut portions in half. Incorporate vegs and fruits you like. Exercise by doing strength training and cardio. I picked up these resistance bands at walmart for only like 6 dollars. Those are great to use. They are great for lazy people. lol I say that because I am some what lazy. You can sit and use them while on the computer or watching tv whenever. Run, swim, ride a bike, or do something you enjoy. You are likely to not procrastionate if you enjoy the activity, rather than it being forced. I lost 12 lbs in 2 months recently because my job. This is not good and I didn't mean to lose that much in a short amount of time, but when your activity level overpowers your calories then you will lose weight. Plus building muscle burns calories. So really make a decision after you get better self esteem. Once you are able to commit to a choose than you will follow through with it.

Well, it makes since that you weigh a little more because you're taller. I am about 5'7. I am "clinically overweight". It runs in my genes as well. I know this because of my mom and my dad. My dad is alright, but his dad died of obesity. My grandma on my moms side is obese as well. Another thing, though, that I have to have checked is my thyroid. It runs in my family as well and it really sux. My mom has to be on pills the rest of her life because hers was overactive as a teen. If mine acts up it will be dead because if its overactive you're skinny. Anyway, I forgot to mention before that I love the dress you picked out and I think it will look just fine on you.
Oh, and another thing to consider, Samantha, is your bones. Do you have small or large bones. I know that most people swear that I'm not 200 because I have such large bones that account for most of the weight. Still, to me, I look it and see it everyday. I avoid mirrors as much as possible. Funny thing is though, when I don't stop to think about it and as long as I only look in the mirror once in the morning to put on my eyeliner then I am not so self-conscience about it. Maybe you should try that and as long as you are staying healthy that's all that matters... Good luck!

    SamanthaSUE ily's picture

Hmm, how would you even know if you have large bones? lol I want to have energy, and be able to wear WHATEVER I want, yanoe? It's going to be hard.

To measure your "bones" you can use a bunch of different methods
    1. Put your middle finger and thumb around your wrist.
if your fingers don't touch you are large frame
if your fingers touch you are medium frame
if your fingers overlap you are small frame

you can also look it up on google because there is another way to measure your elbow or something.. but I can't remember.

Mine don't touch either! Egad! Hmm...I wonder if it really does have anything to do with how easily you can break a bone...the only one I've ever broken was my pinky toe, despite being quite the klutz. XD I find it hilariously pathetic.

And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.

    SaxPlayer2's picture

I don't think size of bones has anything to do with how easily they're broken. Instead, I'm pretty sure that its based on bone density. Be sure to drink lots of milk and get plenty of calcium and broken bones will be few and far between :-)

You need to work on your self esteem before you focus on your body. Seriously... I was at a pretty heavy weight and considered 'chunky' most of my life. Roughly 4 years ago, I started working harder at appreciating myself. I forced myself to look and see how beautiful I was. Probably helped that I had an awesome guy telling me so at the same time... But I've lost a ton of weight since then, and I'm now at a nice, healthy weight. I'm working on doing things to simply better my health now... things like eat better and exercise. Not because I want to lose weight, but because I want to have energy, and feel good all around.

As stated above, if you're going to change your diet that drastically, you need to see your doctor, or a nutritionist to make sure you're eating the proper foods. 1300 (or even 1500) calories doesn't mean a thing... what matters is the type of foods you're eating.

I'm a real picky eater, so I have no idea WHAT to eat? Help ?
    -Samantha

    mvenus929's picture
    Managing Director of Progressive U

I feel your pain. I'm really picky too.

Depending on how picky you are, there are ways to put things like fruits into your food so you don't notice. For example, I've heard of people making a squash puree and adding it to a tomato sauce for spaghetti. It adds a little flavor, but you're focusing on the tomatoes, so it's not some radical change.

I suggest making small changes to your diet. If you like pasta, try switching to the whole wheat kind. It doesn't taste any different, just looks a little funny. You should eat smaller meals more often, so maybe eat some apples and peanut butter (both good for you) when you get home from school. Celery and peanut butter or cream cheese are good as well.

Stir frys are pretty good... take some veggies you like, mix them with some sauce and maybe a scrambled egg, plus some noodles, if you desire, and you got a meal that will last you forever, and is pretty healthy. I make mine with ramen noodles, with a little water and between a quarter and a half of the seasoning packet, and then load in some frozen broccoli.

Chicken's really good, if you make it properly. If you get some Mrs. Dash, you can throw that on top of some boneless skinless breasts, put a little water in a baking dish and pop them in the oven for about a half hour. Serve one over a small bed of rice and you're golden.

I also suggest trying different salads. Instead of going for the iceberg lettuce, try romaine or baby greens with some type of vinaigrette. The wishbone (I think) sprays are pretty good for this. I'm on an oriental kick, so I got a sesame seed dressing to spray on baby greens. Ranch dressing is really heavy and fatty, so I highly suggest you move away from it.

Fries are nice staples too, if you make them yourself. Just get some russet potatoes and slice them up, toss them in a little vegetable oil (not much, just a little so they don't stick to the pan) and put them on a cookie sheet in the oven until they start turning brown. Baked potatoes are good if you don't load them up with sour cream and cheese.

Ediblewoman put up a blog not too long ago about different things that are healthy for the college diet. You can try looking there. Just be willing to try something once. I know I used to hate spinach, and then started trying things with spinach in them, and now I can stand it most of the time.

That's cute! I'll have to remind myself to try things. I'm worried about cooking, too. I don't know what to use with what. I grabbed the raspberry vinaigrette stuff, but I've never actually tried it. I think I'm going to start shopping for myself, instead of letting my mom do it. I hate relying on her to get anything for me. Thank you! Do you have anymore healthy recipes? :)
    -Samantha

    mvenus929's picture
    Managing Director of Progressive U

I've learned most of these through my friends. If you want healthy recipes, go invest in a healthy living cookbook. Those for diabetics are low in sugar, heart-healthy ones are typically low in sodium (which makes you crave sugar, by the way). If you're broke, try going onto a website like recipes.com to see if they have any good recipes. And don't feel nervous about experimenting. I've made pancakes without milk so many times, because I don't buy milk, and the milk my roommates buy typically spoils before it's all used up. Have fun with your food too... if you like chicken alfredo, try putting some of the sauce on a pizza crust, and topping with some cheese and chicken.

And don't deprive yourself of things. If you like chocolate, go and get some individually wrapped dark chocolate squares, and eat one after each meal. Those are filled with all sorts of antioxidants anyway, so they're good for you too :)

I agree with mvenus929. Start with just small changes in your diet. I've found for me that I need to eat less in general. Even too much of a healthy food is bad. So try smaller meals, and having small but healthy snacks when you start feeling hunger coming on. And be sure to keep hydrated. Drinking water can actually stave off hunger for a bit so you're not tempted to eat as much.

I also second the whole grain pasta. It's delicious. ^_^ Also, rice is a good option, because you can mix almost anything into it. Rice with some sort of bean or lentil is especially good for you. And if you're lazy like me, you can probably try some prepared foods...I like Rice-a-Roni myself. I just make a box of that and share it with my family. ^_^

The best thing to do is to try and be more conscious of what foods you're choosing. Little choices like going to something whole grain, or maybe picking a veggie over something sugary will go a long way in helping you develop better eating habits.

Also, listen to what your body is craving. If you find yourself craving a fruit, eat that fruit...it probably has something in it that your body is lacking. WHe you're getting what you need, you tend to be less hungry and as a result, don't eat as much.

    And whatever you do...

    Hmm....
    Well then....
I don't have anything else to suggest...personally, I live off of a good balance of rice, pasta, and everything else I need mixed in. ^_^ When it comes to carbs, I hardly even eat any bread anymore...

OH! Bread can be very counter-productive in trying to lose weight! Avoid white bread like the plague, if you must, and try something whole wheat...

And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.

Oatmeal is good! I don't like it that much, but it's supposed to be really good for you! ^_^
ANyway, the best of luck! I'm in a good mood because, like someone else said, I've been measuring my own progress by the way my clothes fit...and my jeans were falling down yesterday! Squee! I finally jumped on the scale to see, since I felt like I'd lost a lot of weight...and saw it was only six pounds. But it felt like more, because the extra weight is rearranging itself as I lose some of it. ^_^ Made me happy. Still can't find clothes that fit, but it was a huge boost in self-esteem. I hadn't stepped on a scale in, like, six months! ^_^

But really, you'll notice a difference in the way your clothes fit. That's the biggest thing to watch for. And it might just happen slowly--I didn't even notice any of my progress sneaking up on me. It just kinda hit me all at once! Now to keep it that way...

Pie is good! Anyway, I know what you mean. Sometimes I just stop trying and next thing I know my jeans are too loose on me. But sometimes, when I really stop paying attention they get tighter. So, I have to watch it. I find it useless to step on a scale because I know exactly what it's going to say. Funny thing is, people say that when girls loose weight it tends to come off your boobs first. I find that to be very wrong in my case. Every time I loose weight or notice that it has rearranged itself off my waste, I also notice that my bras are getting smaller... it really sucks because it makes me a little topsy turvsey...lol

Some dos and don'ts for you to consider, since you sound a lot like me:

    Don't look at a scale.
    Don't count calories
    Don't exercise for exercising's sake

Do eat healthier things, such as fruits and veggies
Do avoid sugary things and empty calories
Do something you enjoy for exercising (roller/ice skating, tennis, basketball, take your pick)

Like the others said, it's not about the calories, it's about eating the right foods. Lots of carbs aren't going to do you any good if you're not running a marathon or playing a basketball game or something else that takes a large amount of energy. Empty calorie foods don't fill you and don't provide any nutrients.

Don't look at the scale, or you'll become obsessed with it and most likely will be disappointed when you don't see results as soon as you may like. A healthy weight loss speed, unless under direct care of a doctor, is about 1 to 2 pounds a week, so weighing yourself every day isn't going to do you any good. If you see a doctor on any sort of regular basis, then use that (for example, I was on Depo Provera, which required a monthly doctor visit that included taking my weight, so that was the only time I'd see a scale), otherwise, limit it to no more than once a month. That way when you do weigh yourself, you'd be more likely to see a difference, depending on your choice of exercise (if you're building muscle, then you won't see much of a weight change, since your muscle will replace the fat). Instead, measure your progress through how your clothes fit. As your weight shifts to muscle and leans, your clothes will more than likely fit differently.

If you're anything like me (which, from the way your blog is, you sound a lot like me), then you're probably not exercising because everything you've tried ends up turning into a chore, and if you are like me, you hate chores. =P Instead, do something you enjoy, or, depending on how you choose to exercise, do something with it that you enjoy. In other words, instead of running, try roller skating. Instead of doing push-ups, play tennis. Or, if you want to lift weights, set up your weights in the living room and watch TV while you do it.

    O.o What is "regular" dancing?

Dancing in general is very aerobic. Some types are very, very good for toning, such as belly dancing.

Personally, I've liked the Martial Arts. I've lately gotten a Tai Chi DVD and have enjoyed it, though it's been hurting the arches of my feet like hell (I do it barefoot since I don't have tennis shoes). I'd like to get into Karate once I finish college if I can afford it (both time and money wise).
