I'm going to be 18 in July and this year is going to be my first year voting. I am an Obama supporter...I guess because I like the feeling I get watching him. It's like this is the first time I have ever felt a real connection with America, the first time I have felt I belong here and have the responsibility to be the change I want to see in the world. I support his decision to end this war, and I feel that he's worth giving a chance to improve our country.
So I guess my decision to vote for him is one that I am happy with. But it kind of makes me wonder why I stopped considering Clinton. I guess all the talk of her being a "two-faced liar" really effected my reasoning. I can't help but feel guilty for this. I mean, just making my decision based upon what my parents, friends and coworkers say isn't the way I should come to a conclusion.
I guess the way I see it, everybody who runs for president is a "two-faced liar". Try pleasing a whole country without it. It's easy to get caught up in the goal of winning and say things that weren't meant to be said. I can't even imagine trying to stick to a solid opinion, not be allowed to go back on it, and then promise it to a nation. Sometimes things go both ways, but that fact is unacceptable by the public. It's hard to solve the world's problems, and this is a challenge for every candidate. I think every candidate feels contradictions on the inside even though they voice their promises with strength and confidence. Just because Hilary has let that become more apparent doesn't mean she's the only one feeling that way.
Honestly I really admire Hilary Clinton. She got turned down by NASA as a 12 year old, their response to her question on how to become an astronaut being that women aren't allowed. Obviously she pushed past this blow, as she is now giving it her all to become the first female president. And I like what she stands for. Now, I don't know enough to decide whether to trust her to carry out her claims, but I do know that I admire her for everything she's been through and put up with and I don't doubt her strength and intelligence.
I'm just tired of hearing people's accusations. We all lie. We're all two faced. And whoever says they don't needs to examine themselves a little closer, because that characteristic is our nature. It's something we all possess and battle, including this year's candidates for election.

The two bit liar part bothers you with Hillary? What about Obama and his minister from his church? You really think you can hang out with someone for 20 years all the time and not know that they are a racist bigot?
Jeanna Marie
huh? I don't think I ever said that. And I don't know which you are calling a racist bigot, but I haven't "hung out" with either for 20 years so I guess I don't know.
No, no, no not you silly!!!
I am sorry, I guess I thought you would know what I am talking about. Have you not read any of the reports about Obama's minister from his church? Obama has been going to the same church for 20 something years, he was married by the minister there, he has BBQ's with the minister, he had his children baptized by this minister... this is someone he "hung" out with often... well his minister's doctrine has come out lately to be very racist. About black pride and how Obama being president will finally free the black man, and how whites will be the minority and blah blah blah, well Obama has claimed to not have any idea how this man has felt for all this time, but then come to find out this man has been preaching racism against whites for a long long time... but Obama had "no idea"
That is what I was talking about. Obama has many skeletons in his closet too, just thought maybe you could check him out a little more, and his relationships before you decide to vote. However, I do think it is awesome that someone so young is so excited about voting!!!!

Yeah, see I don't keep up enough. I hear about these things but don't go deeper into them. But I agree with you, and I will continue to look into him a little more before I make my decision. That's what I was saying, that they all have their little flaws. But doesn't everybody? That's what works me up about the Hilary thing. People scream about how shady she is but they don't realize that anybody who has survived in politics is. Some are just better at hiding it. Hearing about Obama's drug use didn't even make me blink. All I did was laugh at the media for making such a big deal out of it. The way I see it is that everybody has a past and we shouldn't linger there. I always think of what type of drama would go flying about me if I were running for president, and it makes me realize how ridiculous we are in so many of our judgements.

It's not just about the pastor. It's also about the community, the youth groups, the social justice work, the location, the facilities, etc. Saying that someone can't be president because their pastor gave a few crappy sermons is ridiculously shallow. How many of the presidents who came before gave anti-gay bigoted sermons, or (further back) maybe even anti-interracial marriage sermons? The only reason people are going after this is that there is nothing else to go after. It's pretty weak, IMHO.

I agree with you completely. I was just pointing out to her that they all have their skeletons. Finding a flawless person to become president is impossible. Finding someone who isn't lying about what they are going to do once they get in the white house, is impossible.
Truth is the gas prices won't change due to the election,
The war will not automatically stop because of the election, and
gay marriage won't automatically be legal because there is a Presidential change. Actually very little will change. It is all about who will be appointed to the cabinet and underneath that actually run the office.
I do however think in this case with Obama runs a little deeper than having a pastor that is a racist and not knowing it. These men were close. I think it is a lie every time he opens his mouth and says he had no idea... why not just fess up? Knowing that his pastor felt that way doesn't mean that he does... but saying he doesn't know after being BFF with the guy for 20 years, makes me feel like... well maybe he won't know the country any better....

There's a certain measure of respect and leniency given to pastors, though. Very few people would take their pastor to task on a sermon, except maybe in private quarters, and we have no business knowing what was said between Obama and his pastor in private. It is the same with any candidate, nee, any person who has a relationship with a pastor. People are not held solely accountable for what their pastor says from the pulpit. And honestly, Reverend Wright may be a bit of a nutcase with a knack for hyperbole, but he isn't that far off on his stance about race relations. White people are in denial in this country.
