Down With the Death Penalty!!

Tagged:

Soon, the Supreme Court will be discussing the legality of lethal injection.  Hopefully, they abolish capital punishment altogether!!  I recently changed my stance on the death penalty from supporter to opponent because I realized that issuing the death penalty does nothing but inhibit the justice system (unlimited appeals), and in no way deters future criminals.  Muderers and rapists continue to roam the streets of America, endagering our society.  Life in prison without parole could in fact be worse than the death penalty.  There are only 3,350 inmates on death row; we could build another Supermax Prison, like the one in my state (Colorado), to house these convicted inmates, and save millions of dollars and minutes from not dealing with the appeals system extended to death row convicts in our justice system.  Does anyone agree with me?

I think the death penalty should not be legal. If u kill someone for a crime you are jus as bad as the person who did the crime. Also, it doesnt do any good. Sure u killed someone but there are still many other people out there. Also, I believe the crimminal would suffer more if they had a life sentence in jail. They woud suffer more and live the guilt of do something terrible. They will suffer muuch much more.

Your arguments regarding the appeals process are essentially an argument for reforming the judicial system rather than for abandoning the death penalty. We used to be able to execute people in a much more orderly, timely and cost effective manner. With modern forensic science the chances of executing an innocent person have gone way down. We need to bring some efficiency back into the process.

Why should there be unlimited appeals? Most of these are totally baseless and just a waste of time. And why should executions take more than a year from the date that a criminal is convicted. There should be a fair process that allows due process but the lawyers need to be reigned in. Justice delayed is justice denied. The victim's families deserve better. And they deserve a lot more than the scum who committed the crimes. The current system has swung far to far in favor of the criminals rights and the rights of citizens and victims for justice are getting short shift.

The death penalty would be much more effective as a deterrent if it were done in a timely manner and it would be much more cost efffective than life in prison if the process was reformed.

I think the argument about the lethal injection being cruel is a crock. I've had a few minor surgeries and when they knock you out with heavy drugs you don't feel anything. The Doctor could have crushed my testicles with a sledge hammer or cut off my head with a chainsaw and I would not have felt a thing. I certainly hope the Supreme Court knocks this nonsense down.

I could not agree more.

The sooner people realize that many of these criminals are inhuman monsters who will not hesitate to hurt them, their family, and their friends, the better. It's time the pendulum swings back in favor of victims and their families, and we stop putting "rehabilitated" criminals back into society only to continue to create victims over and over again.

Agreed.

I saw somewhere that 60% of all criminals recommit and go back to jail.

Fantastic rehabilitation.
