And now for some reality.... I'm not trying to scare people, I just want people to realize that it is important to think through every possible aspect of sex before engaging at all or with a new partner.
How are STDs/STIs transmitted?
It really depends on the particular disease/infection. Most are transmitted by bodily fluid- sex of any kind. HPV (especially genital warts) and genital herpes can spread simply through contact even with proper condom use. (This is because the infected skin areas may not be covered by the condom.)
What are the potential disease risks with oral sex?
It is a myth that oral sex is safe. Diseases and infections can still be transmitted!
Potential transmission through:
PERFORMING ORAL SEX ON A MAN- Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis A, Herpes (rare), HPV, Syphilis
PERFORMING ORAL SEX ON A WOMAN- Herpes (rare)
RECEIVING ORAL SEX (man)- Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Herpes, Syphilis
RECEIVING ORAL SEX (woman)- Herpes
What diseases can be transmitted through vaginal or anal intercourse?
The fact is that the same diseases can be transmitted through vaginal and anal intercourse. These are all of the STDs: Chlamydia Gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, Herpes, HIV, HPV, Syphilis, and Trichomoniasis.
More detailed information about each STD and STI coming very soon... I'm getting kicked off my own computer.
Again, any questions, message me in private, or ask here.

Someone once asked me (because Nursing majors know everything there is to know about any health issue ever, I learned it in nursing school) about something they read about getting, I think it was, Gonorrhea in your mouth. They wanted to know how that could even happen. I told them to think really hard because I really didn't want to explain it. Two minutes later, beet red, they walked away.
I think if people are scared by this information, someone didn't do a very good job of teaching it to them in the first place.
Way to educate! :-) Except, I can't take syphilis seriously anymore since the episode of Grey's Anatomy where there was an outbreak of it in the hospital. ;-)
Are STIs and STDs different? I thought STI was the new term, like STD replaced VD.

"...There is a crushing guilt that comes with being a Catholic. Whether things are good or bad or you're simply... eating tacos in the park, there is always the crushing guilt."
-30 Rock-
STD= Sexually Transmitted Disease
STI= Sexually Transmitted Infection
I think the kids are calling them STIs these days... I guess disease sounds more scary? More permanent maybe?
I'm not a nursing major, but I am the one that everyone goes to for any health questions. My only somewhat real credentials are a first aid and emergency care class and 17 years of being in and out of hospitals. It's amazing what you pick up being an inpatient if you pay attention... = D

"Democracy works only when you vote. When you don't take the time to vote for the candidate you find the least offensive, you run the risk of electing the candidate you find the most offensive."
Great post! It's about time someone used an argument other than religion to back up their ideas about sexual behaviour.
cheers
F*** Religion. Read more here:

I'm just educating. I'm doing what parents and schools are afraid of doing.

Jumping Jesus, I'm off to join an abstinence group. Here I was worrying about just catching 'girl germs', and now I find out all this stuff can happen!! Next thing you know, you'll be telling me that you can get a girl pregnant even if she goes to the toilet afterwards. This is upsetting, I'm nowhere near accomplished enough to blow myself (yet) either, but neither am I anywhere near accomplished enough to refuse a blow job; not even from a really ugly chick. I am doomed........
Are vocal anti-religious Agnostics welcome at abstinence groups, or do you think the other kids will tease me? Would they be all like "Bow to Jesus now, bitch!! Bow down or scram from our abstinence group!!" prodding me and slapping me about like the preacher does to Daniel Day Lewis in the new movie? Imagine that, if religion finally managed to make me a bigger slave to my cock than wild abandon ever could.

I think that teenagers know these risks, many just dont see them as reality. I personally dont know anyone who has any of these diseases except for a family member whose husband cheated on her and gave them to her. Sometimes I think that teens feel like adults are trying to scare us out of something. In school, I personally have not been taught what these diseases are, like the stark truth about what they are like. We have a week every year where our science teacher has to give us an hiv/aids talk and test, but it is the same every year, and that is as far as it goes. I have heard these terms through the television and at my local health department, but I do think that the schools she be making a better effort to educating students about these things. Sometimes i think those in power feel like if they dont discuss it, it makes it go away and not be a problem.
